I'm just gonna post a few pictures every other day or so so we can see it grow and whatnot. The pumpkin outgrew sling number one today so I put it into a new sling that gives it a wider birth than the previous one.It will eventually crush the leaf beneath it I think, but theres nothing I can do about that. The next few days should be very interesting to see how it adapts to the new sling. A strange thing I noticed is that the bottom part of the pumpkin where it used to be connected to the flower is not centered in the middle of the pumpkin, it is over to the side of it. I wonder how long it will be until it starts getting an orange color. I'll post back in a day or two with more updates. As allways thanks for the help and encouragement, I dig you gals! Bond

hokie dokie, sorry its been so long Ive been so short on time with all this exam ridiculousness, here are some of the more recent pictures, I had two secondary vines come out a few days ago and they are looking pretty promising. Ive been making a real point the past few days to keep the tap roots well watered with misting and I think its starting to pay off with these new vines. The growth of the pumpkin appears to have slowed some. Maybe I need to water it more? I would stick the moisture meter in there but the tub is so clogged with roots I fear I will harm the plant! I poke a little in with my finger to see if its still moist. Im still giving them 15 30 15 every other watering. Though I chopped one of the large leaves yesterday it seems to be a platform for new growth. I do wonder about whether it would be wise to chop the part of the vine that is above the pumpkin, the leaves never look too well. I dont know if its trying to channel all of the nutrients towards fruit production or if its because they cant get enough light or if its because pumpkins weren't meant to have leaves 10 feet high. To chop or not to chop that is the question. Oh and by the way, thinking ahead for new projects in the summer I have begun to tally a list of things I would like to grow during the summer indoors. I would like to get some input from you all on some fun projects, I was thinking of doing pineapple, I know I know, they arent bread with seeds any more but thats what college is for, the in house microbiologist said she could help me develop some cultures in agar and other growing mediums. Qualifications for an idea are that it can be completed in under 6 months and that it is a type of fruit or vegetable, beyond that the sky is the limit. Lend me your voices! what would be fun and colorful and completely impractical!?!? hope you all enjoy the pics, Bond

Let's see, what could be as impractical as an indoor pumpkin? Maybe a watermelon? And BTW, I always find seeds inside pineapples. If you slice off the skin, you can see them just below the flesh. I'm thinking they are inside those brown spots left behind. Instead of seeds, you can start a new plant from the crowns. But it's not a six month project, more like a couple of years.

Pumpkin fruits are mostly water, so it may have slowed down because it's not getting enough water. If you ramp up the amount of water, just be sure to cut back on the amount when the fruit is close to maturity or else it will split. Some people cut their pumpkin vines off about 8 to 12 feet beyond the last fruit so that the plant puts more energy into growing the fruit and less into new leaf and flower production. It depends on the type of pumpkin, though. As for something else to grow inside, how about corn? You could grow an ornamental corn (some are edible) and you'd have a souvenir of your progress in the end. It could be a really tall corn or even stalks in shades other than green. In addition, you'd have the joy of throttling every stalk to pollinate it. LOL. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

how descriptive DJ :) Congratulations Bond! I wasn't sure either but you've done it. Now, we are all waiting to see how big it gets. I've also cut pumpkin vines off (toward the end of the growing season) so that they will put energy into the main fruit.

Clarify for me. Are you living in a dorm room? If so, will the pumpkin stay there with you for summer session or will you go home and that's where you'll start your new project? Indian corn is a great idea--a Native American family who I work with had me try some Indian Corn soup--didn't know there was such a thing. It was made with elk meat too and it was Wonderful. So, it isn't necessarily totally impractical. :)

Denise, I am growing in the dorm right now but will be moving out on the 28th for a month and then I will be moving back into the dorms again. I will probably cart my stuff with me then and the plants wont be big enough to worry about yet. Whatever I chose to do. corn sounds good but perhaps a little tall for my living area. maybe some more gourds or a giant cantaloupe or tomatoes. I have not tried other things but I think that I like vines. I like the way they think, what an active lifestyle. I like plants that appear to be thinking things. The way the tendrils move around for instance in a circular motion searching for something to grasp onto was a fascinating process for me. Anyway Ill post more pics in a few days the pumpkin is doing well, I have to make a new sling tomorrow, it outgrows them so fast! post back later, Bond

Wow, so I had to start moving my stuff out of the dorm this week apparently. I took all my stuff down and they said I had to get rid of my garden stuff so I had to chop it early, but I really couldnt be more happy with the results. I took some more pictures of the plant after I chopped it and some of the pumpkin. I have not decided what to do with the pumpkin yet. I want a few more weeks of aesthetic value and then I'm going to see if it made any seeds. Ill probably be gone for a little while seeing as I have to get an apartment and get a job for the summer but Ill be back! I sure have enjoyed this project, and I want to thank you all one last time for the help. Heres some good departing photos, HAPPY GROWWINGGGGG SEE YOU NEXT SEMESTER!

Way to go! You have certainly been an inspiration to me. I don't have a very large back yard but it's like a field compared to your dorm room. I always thought I really didn't have the space to grow a pumpkin but you've given me some ideas. Great job and such a cute little pumpkin you produced. No telling how big it would have gotten. Have a great summer and keep us posted on your next project!

WILSON!!!! Ps:There it is Loretta,Isn't he a handsome devil! there were a ton of seeds inside, I don't think any of them are viable but it couldn't hurt to give it a shot. If not they will make for some good eating!
