Has anyone ever grown geraniums from seed and made them bloom indoor? If so can you give me some details?

Hi Ms. Blackmon, and I believe you are new here. I want to welcome you to Garden Buddies, and hope you will stay with us. I have never grown Geraniums from seed, I'm sorry to say. I grow the annual, which is really a pelargonium, from cuttings of the originals, and the perennials by dividing the clump. If they can be grown from seed, I am sure one of the other Buddies here will have done it. Are you wanting to grow the annual Pelargonium, or the perennial Geranium? Do let us know, and tell us a little about yourself and what else you grow.

Thank you for the warm welcome lovelife. I am growing annual Pelargonium from seed. As soon as I get some pictures together I will post it on this forum. I guess you can tell I am new because here. I just noticed that this post should under Geranium. Should I move my question there? I want to know exactly how to make my annual pelargoniums grow. I am starting them indoors.

You might get more answers in that forum because the geranium buddies would be there. I'm so glad you found us! I hope you will go to the Social forum and introduce yourself to us.

This is the first year I grow pelargonium from seeds too. I sowed the seeds I collected from my Raspberry Ripple last year in February. Surprisingly they germinated. So far it's quite easy, as I didn't provide them extra light. (First photo) After that I ordered some more pelargonium seeds (Ripple mixed & Black velvet series) from Thompson & Morgan and sewed them in March. They germinated too. (Second photo) I'm happy with them, they're very easy to grow from seeds like other annuals. So far so good, I hope they'll keep growing.

Thank you Hankeat my flower look dry but I water them often. One of my friend told me that they don't need much heat they like light just as you mentioned. I had them under a heater. but I move them to room temperature and in the window. I think they still need help. here is a picture of me. p.s. excuse my spelling and grammer

I should describe more about the way I do. I grow them in normal room temperature at about 20C and water them twice a month. I take them out from my small green house, when they've four leaves. They stay near the glass wall and heater in my living room. In fact they've the best place among other seedlings. Ms. Blackmon I wish you all the luck.

Thank you Han for all the good advice I think I water them too much because you water them twice a month and thank you now I know I can apply more heat. I hope this works. I will post you a picture when they bloom and I hope you will let me know when your pelargonium bloom. By the way I am growing black velvet also. I have the black velvet collection (scarlet, salmon, rose and appleblossom)

Did you buy your seeds from Thompson & Morgan too? Sure, I'll post the photo. Few weeks ago I took them out of greenhouse and transplanted them into trays. Yesterday I put them outdoor. Now I water them according to moon calender. (about every 9 days) Everything seems all right.

I've found that seed-started zonals can't be expected to bloom the first season, but..if wintered-over inside..will offer you years of color after. At present, I have about two dozen massive plants in bloom that were started from seed several years ago, growing in 5 inch pots or large containers. They summer outside, get a drastic cutting back in fall when brought in, then watered just enough to keep them alive thru winter months. Are in an unheated sunroom (minimum temps of 38 degrees), usually are full-leafed and blooming by February, continue on all summer into late fall when they get their "haircuts". In March, they all recieve a soil top dressing of a pelleted fertilizer that gets watered in over time, is good for 4 months. Cuttings are taken from trimmings in fall, started in a mixture of perlite and potting soil, are well-rooted within 6 weeks and ready for potting up. I have solid colors; a variety called "Speckles" (with multi-colored blossoms), and variegated leafed ones to say nothing of several hanging baskets of ivy geraniums and containers of scented pelargoniums as well, all in bloom at present. Keep pinching back new growth to force bushiness once your plants get bigger or legginess will occur, especially when days get shorter. Enjoy your geraniums, but BEWARE! You can soon find you're becoming "overrun" with them as they're a bit habit forming!!

Hankeat This year I bought black velvet from Park seed and they are getting big I did not give them any plant food because I thought I read some where that if grown from seed do not feed it until you plant it out side or they will not flower. Olesagehen I grow geranium last year from seed but I did care when they bloomed yet they bloom just fine the same year. I don't know if it is because once I planted them outside I then began to water and feed them ever day with miracle gro. This year I want them to bloom by April the 15 inside that is why I want advise on how I could do that. Blessing to you both and I hope my comment helped plus I will post my geraniums tomorrow if all goes well.

Please Post picture. If it is a yellow brown color they need to be in the shade and let them dry out because they may have a fungus from to moist soil. I’m presently curious to know about what is the weather and soil condition now in Berlin. If the leaves are dark dry brown I would think you could pitch the dead ones off and water them because they where not watered enough. Three of my black velvets appear as if they have gotten ill because they have pale color leaves that are curling on the ends. I will post their picture and hope you can post yours then maybe some one can answer our questions better. }

I found fungus in few of the trays, when they're still in green house. Then I removed the fungus and took them out of green house. Now I put them on the windowsill outside my sleeping room. (photo 1) You can see some cuttings with variegate leaves from last summer on the windowsill inside too. They're protected from rain. Now the temperature in Berlin is about 10C in daytime and 3C at night. In photo 2 & 3 are the seedlings from black velvets. You can see the brown spot in the middle of few leaves. In photo 4 are the seedlings from raspberry ripple. I think pale colour leaves with curl edges could be due to sudden direct sunlight and dry air in winter. We call it sunburn in Germany. I read it from somewhere. It takes at least 100 days from seeds to flowers. I think it's quite impossible to let them flowering before 15 April. Unless we've proper equipment.

Your geraniums are pretty and they look healthy to me. The black velvet turn darker when they are located in a cool spot and I believe 10c is 50 degrees which would be cool. Three of my geraniums look sick as you can see in the photograph below. I just read this Geraniums grow best when fertilized at regular intervals proper spaced. Yellow leaves could be a sign you waited too long to fertilize. Do you know what is wrong with my plants? Oh I believe you can just pick the brown leafs at the bottom off.

Ms Blackmon. I think your Pelargoniums need more soil. It's better to re-pot them.
