I am a new gardener and have a couple of questions

Today I bought a lot of seeds and soil to start some seeds.

Is it too early to start them now? Mostly annuals

And how do I find a zone map?

I am not sure exactly what zone I am in. I am guessing I am in zone 5 B

Which one is warmer 5a or 5 B or 6 Canadian?

thanks

Here are two link you may like
http://www.gardenbuddies.com/buddymap/netscapeworld.php
this one shows the zone and average temperature
http://www.care2.com/c2c/groups/disc.html?gpp=331&pst=954772&archival=&post s=1
I like to grow annuals indoors because I can enjoy the flower bulbs early and it is cheaper to grow them from seed.
I am new too so I hope I wrote this right.

Thanks Growflower

I was looking for a Canadian map

I did find one but its not very good. It just gives the whole province as one zone. That can't be right. It must be different in different places

I hope my plants turn out ok. I have no flowers to show you now but hopefully this summer I will

I don't know when to start these seeds. Can any one tell me please. I know its about June before it warms up

WE still have snow and it's cold

thanks

That's not a dumb question. You may have noticed that this site doesn't have any ads on it. This site is free, but EJ is the site owner and he pays for this site out of his own pocket. If you like this site and get a lot of use out of it, you can donate money to him. The site is pretty expensive to run (as you can see by the goal on this year's donation graph) and could be shut down without funding from people who can donate. A lot of the site members like to share their gardens here and we really love the friends we've made on this site, so we donate to help keep the site alive. If you look in the Site Problems and Fixes topic, I think the "Understanding Our Problem" thread explains a lot of things, including the fact that this site might resort to ads if it doesn't get sufficient donations.

Is this one any good for you? You can zoom in by locating your province on the drop-down list above the right hand corner of the map.

The seed packets usually specify when to plant seeds by saying to plant them a certain number of weeks before the last frost. Here is a list of average last frost dates for some places in Canada:

Heirlooms

The map says 6a for Halifax. That means warm huh. Now I know why it says May 6h last frost date
.
That's even better for me. It gives me a chance to plant before I go back to work

Now I need to change my zone in my profile
I was way off

Thanks again

Yes, that is slightly warmer than my zone. My average last frost date is May 23. I usually cannot harrow the ground here until mid-April, but I am hoping for an early thaw.

Hi Ann, and welcome to Garden Buddies. I am in zone 5 also. I will start my seeds in March indoors, and transplant to the garden in May. The un-official guildeline we use here is that nothing goes into the garden before Mother's Day. We sometimes fudge on that, depending on current weather conditions and I have planted some things in April, with plant covers held in reserve just in case.

I'm so glad you and Growflower found us.
