Hello buddies! This is my first post but Ive been lingering here since last year. Ive learned so much, thanks to you all! I got some mexican sunflower seeds (Tithonia) today and I need advice on planting. Im in zone 7. Should I start them indoors or just go ahead and plant outside? From what Ive read they are a pretty easy to grow plant and somewhat coveted! lol

Welcome Jamie----really glad that you came aboard and introduced yourself. You might do that also in the Social Gallery! I'm not familiar with your zone but I'm wondering if they would do well with direct sowing as they are easy to grow and you're in zone 7. Would other buddies agree?

Hello Jaimie. I think I would start them indoors. Your soil might still be too cool for seedlings. And I would not plant them outdoors until after your last frost date.

Hi, I accidentally stumbled onto this thread. Wish it had been sooner. I have planted mexican sunflowers before. I love them. I had tithonia torch. I am in zone 6 and I put them around an apple tree. I planted them directly in the ground after danger of frost had passed. Kept them moist and the grew. And grew and grew....then the wind knocked them down!! The stalks were badly hurt. I thought I had lost them for good!! But, I ran yarn under each of them all the way around the tree and pulled them back up. I tied them securely but not tight enough to cause more damage. And...they grew anyway. All I did was water them after that. When the first flowers bloomed I cut them and put them in vases. The more I cut, the more flowers the plants produced. And the plants get bushier as well. My plants got over 6 feet tall!! Butterflies just love them!! I bought some seed again this year. The 4 foot variety. I have a better place for them this year. I can't wait to get started!! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I did mine!!! I hope you let us know how it goes. I would love to hear about them!! Angela
