Anybody ever hear of snapdragons returning the next year like a perennial?? Mine are coming back up from the old plants!! I guess the mulch helped????

It's not unusual. Mine often self sow. I have a pot of them on my deck that I just never got around to tossing out in the fall. They never really died completely and are growing just fine now.

Mine never completely died back either and we had temps as low as 14°. That was without protection of anykind, so I would imagine with protection it could get a lot lower.

You're in a couple of zones warmer than me but 2 ladies have given you info. that sounds positive.
I do know that they last a long time---into Fall--one of the last annuals to die.

Technically, they are not an annual. They are a tender perennial (Zones 7-10). They can overwinter in colder zones with a good mulching and/or in a protected area, but not always. Seil has overwintered hers in Zone 6. I left mine in the ground for the first time with a covering of leaves here in Zone 5, but I'm not sure that they survived.

I have had some survive but usually they burn out the second year after seeding. I even get a few self sowers sometimes.

I have a nice protected bed under a very deep overhang and my snaps will often winter over in that bed. I have some that are in there 5th year in that bed.

Wow Seil, 5 years! I have one snap that I particularly like - Night and Day. It has overwintered for me before. Maybe I will keep it from going to seed and see if I have any of your luck.

Most of mine are several years old too. I don't think my "brighton rock" series survived though...figures since I really, really like this type.

Wow, so much information!! Tender perennial and not annual. They are sold as an annual here I think. I have had them reseed themselves before but this is my first to live through the winter. I am happy about it though. One less plant to start or buy this year!! Thank you all for your info. It will be fun to see how many years I can get these to live...... Thanks again!!

Back when I lived in an apartment (Zone 6), I gardened in containers on a balcony. The snapdragon seeds must have gotten into the dirt between the bricks in the building - they were growing out of the brick.
