I have three new window boxes to fill.
My brother Alan just put them up today and they are on his side of the driveway so he asked me to fill them with something very fragrant (guys are all suckers for the smelly ones, aren't they?). The problem is this is the North side of the house and my neighbors 2 story house is very close to us, so while it is fairly bright, it only gets very late evening direct sun exposure. So...any suggestions for a fragrant shade loving annual?

Gee that's a tough one Seil. I know torenia, impatiens and begonias would look great there but I of nothing for a planter in the shade with fragrance.

What about petunias, they would make a great show and would trail down over the boxes ??

How about four o'clocks (Mirabilis jalapa)? I don't know if they bloom in the first year (I've been holding out for the all-white ones, so I haven't tried them myself, yet), but if not, maybe a nursery near you will have some in bloom.

My fave is nasturtiums (trailing and otherwise),then there's moonflowers, heliotrope, mignonette and nicotiana. Many petunia (prhaps the wave series) are scented too. Then there are perennials...why not consider them?

Thank you, lots of ideas here. I'm not the best judge of fragrance either which doesn't help. I have had heliotrope for years but never considered it very fragrant yet they say it is on that web site. Also, I've always had mine in full sun and it did fine so I never considered it for the shade. I also have never thought of petunias as fragrant. My nose must not work too well. I have some seedlings growing of both of these as well as nasturtiums so that is a thought. I do want something that will trail somewhat. I don't think I want perennials here. I doubt very much that they would winter anyway. This is the North side and it gets the worst of the winter winds. Even though I'm going to plant in plastic liners I don't think these metal planters will give them any insulation to survive.

Yes, four o'clocks do bloom the first year, but may not be suitable for a window box...mine have been known to grow to over four feet tall...most will stay around two to three feet and once started they can go nuts and be rather hard to get rid of, so plant them where they don't interfere with your other things. Seil, what about a miniature rose? or a Moss Rose?

How about some scented geraniums, fruited sage or lemon verbena along with some flowers? White Alyssium...a few pansies are scented but they don't carry far. Heliotrope does have a vanilla fragrance but not all plants are scented. I only buy them in bloom now and test them out for scent first.
