...and don't think I'll ever tire of it. Between the chartreuse edge and dash of red, and the fact that they stand alert even in the muggiest weather....they're my favorite. Here's this year's bunch:

Your coleus is so pretty and healthy. I like that little blue flower though in the last pic the best. Cute Purse!

That is an eyecatcher for sure. How many plants did you use in the bed for that big effect? Your daughter is darling with her little purse. I agree about Coleus, I always have some. I like collecting the seeds and starting them inside in the winter. you never know what you'll get from them. Coleus really shine at this time of the year in my garden as the heat is beginning to take it's toll on many of my plants. I like pairing the coleus with purple perilla as a contrast. Mary Mary

I used 18 (very small plants) for that area. I think I had a plat of 24, so I put the rest in other spots. I think probably the look is rather garish. A lot of people walk by it, notice it and never mention it. LOL. I have never been complimented on it. I like it a lot though b/c of the neat foliage and the way it looks like it is planted on a mound (it's not). I'm kind of into neat foliage. I will research perilla to check it out!

Not at all! No more so than red flowers would be. The burgundy tones of the coleus echo your shutters. I think the effect is very nice. I wish mine looked as full as yours.

Ohhh...wow, lovely. I have one in a pot but not the same color. Need to found a permanent place for it. BTW, your daughter is so cute...what nationality is she? Betsy

I'm with you, Love the Coleus. My mom and grandma grew the dark red...can't recall its name. I am crazy about all of the varieties myself. Grandma's would get almost to six feet tall and very "bushy", at least until the pony got to them. That's why mine are still on the porch. These were in a marked down basket at Lowes.
Figured for $3 I couldn't go wrong and I knew they would take right off once they were repotted. These are developing roots nicely and I'll be potting them this weekend.
They look like I'll be pinching them back again soon. As soon as more are growing I'll be setting them outside.
Just trying to keep the deer away from the things I really want.

Yours is lovely and if you like it that's all that matters. I planted chartreuse coleus with persian shield this year, knock your socks off. But I agree, the prettiest flower is the blue one. She is lovely.

Oh boy. I have been so behind on my emails and it's a shame b/c gardenbuddies stuff is my favorite!!! Thank you so much for the comments about my coleus last year (and my blue flower ). They get filtered sun (filtered via very tall trees) in the morning and straight through to almost all of the afternoon, with a few hours of full sun (not filtered) coming at them from the side. I love to buy these things when they are babies in a 24 pack and plant them around the foliage of Spring stuff. Right now, they have grown tall enough to obscure a small Spirea bush and a small boxwood. This year I decided to plant them on both sides of the steps. Here are some pics I took of them this week:

This is the first year that I've planted coleus but it won't be the last. They are so colorful. Here is a basket of 12 that I've got on my porch.

Oh boy. I LOVE your coleus basket, Lew. That is funny to see because I have planted all the types of coleus that you have in your basket. I took leftover ones and put them together in a pot, thinking I'd do something with them later but now I love them together. Next year, I'm going to use a big basket like you. By the way....I have a whole line of the pineapple colored ones (the dominant one in your basket) but they aren't growing as quickly as the other ones. I keep them watered well but they are in full brutal sun and they don't seem to like the sun as much as the darker ones.

Thanks, Charlene. I have to water mine every day now that the weather has turned so hot. They sure let you know if you don't water them quick enough. They wilt and lay down like they are dying. <g>

Hooray for coleus! Charlene and Linda, both of you have beautiful ones. When nothing is blooming, there is still lots of color in the garden. I grow them in pots most of the time, but I've noticed lately that many of the newer coleuses have been hybridized to grow in full sun. That makes them a winner in any part of the garden, IMO.

Something else I love about these coleus. They are so-o-o-o-o easy to root. Every once in awhile, one of my dogs(Labs with whip tails) will break a piece off. Stick it in a glass of water and within a week, there are lots of roots growing. I'm going to try planting them in my garden and see how long they last.
