This summer has been one of experimentation - growing a bunch of different plants, annuals and perennials. Of the annuals, besides Coleus I like double impatiens:
...but I really like Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar Periwinkle, or Annual Vinca) - I can't believe how they looked great with no water during our record heatwave this week -- all while keeping perky and with flowers. I like the dark green, neat and shiny foliage too. I will be using them more next year:
Cheers.

Generally I do not grow annuals, but a neighbour of mine suggested growing Limnanthes douglasii (sorry, no pictures - support needed). I liked the plant as it self-sows in the same place it grows unlike most annuals. Seeds germinate very soon and the new plants are about 10cm high before the winter comes. They overwinter undamaged with no protection at all.

Charlene I grew Vinca for the first time this year in a small spot and it's still in flower. And I even dug it out a few weeks ago to plant bulbs and then put it back. I will definitely use more next year.
Corinne it's a very common plant in the nurseries in the spring and the seed catalogues will have plenty too.

Love all these pics everyone posted. The ones I got came in big containers of individual compartments of 2 dozen and the tag just said "Vinca. Annual" I like that the foliage kept neat. I just love annuals. My sweet alyssum is still completely in bloom. In my front garden, besides my 3 evergreens (boxwood, holly tree and rhodedendron) and my clematis and one Spirea, I'm keeping everything else Spring bulbs and annuals!

Man I love your pics. Is it easy to grow double impatiens by seed? I'm looking for something I can mess with for a first timer.

Vinca is a great low-water plant, and always looks great throughout the summer here in our desert area.

I did not know there was any Annual Vinca. It looks very pretty, I'll try to find seeds for next season. Thank you for the information.
