These two 2 shots were taken in late July in central New Jersey zone 7. I'm not sure of the variety. I could look back at the packs if anyone is interested. Jim

Jim this is one of my favorite flowers to grow. But very expensive. Without a greenhouse growing from seed is out of the question. Last year I got them through mail order. And I'm glad. I never even saw one for sale locally. Are all these beautities in your garden?

I've always wanted to try them. I saw some blue doubles in a planter and they looked like blue roses. Sometimes I see them for sale during Mothers Day or Easter. Where did you buy yours?

I got mine from Burpee Seeds and Plants. And I will be ordering more this year. The plants came small but healthy and flowered all the way until frost. And the cut flowers lasted a long time.

Thanks Arlene, I guess I am a little resentful toward Burpee because of what they did to Heronswood Nursery. However, I am finding it hard to resist not at least checking out their new location in PA since it is close enough to drive to.

Burpee bought out Heronswood in 2000 with Dan Hinkley and staff on board. As is the corporate way, when the nursery didn't prove profitable enough, they announced the closing and locked the gates. Burpee moved the nursery to Doylestown, PA where plants would be tested for a broader client base, not just the pacific NW. The catalog and website went glossy, the offerings became less and Dan Hinkley and crew were locked out of Heronswood. Plants were shipped out to PA. Heronswood is really just a franchise now, a boutique name. That is what happens. The big guys buy out the little guys and homogenize everything for profit, to cover the big buyout price and keep stock holders happy (though Burpee is a private company). However, I guess you can't blame people who work hard and long to build something up, not to want to profit from it and make life a little easier. I'm sure Dan Hinkley is crying all the way to the bank. Hinkley has a website now: Dan Hinkley for those who still want to read his prose.

Those are beautiful, Jim, and I'd love to know the variety name. They look beautiful with your angelonia which I also love to grow. After seeing Arlene's beauties this past summer I want to try them again. I had tried growing them before in containers but this summer I'll put them right in the ground.

Jim I cannot believe you have such giant Heliotrope in the same zone as me. Mine stay so darn small. Plus I am drooling over your lush lisianthus planting. And I must say I love you cute gardener there.

I see them on the Thompson and Morgan UK site. Are you sure you spelled it right when you searched? Lisianthus is also known as Eustoma grandiflorum.

Jim: Your Lisianthus are gorgeous and your gardener "helper" is absolutely precious! Arlene: Love your Lisianthus too!! I want to grow these beautiful flowers, but thought that they wouldn't do well in my hot & humid area. Any thoughts on this?

Oh Shirley do try them. They will do fine in the spring and early summer. By mid July the flowering may slow down but keep them watered and by mid September they will crank up again until frost. And the cut flowers last over a week. If you see them for sale buy some and if you are able, order from Parks or Burpee as small plants. That's what I do. They are inpossible to grow from see because they need a greenhouse and need to have been started in January. I had them in the ground and in pots. The ones in pots were moved to the back of my home during their 'down' time.

Would you believe I have seeds for these lovely flowers. I do also have heat mats and grow lights, so I'm going to give that a try. I've also read that they are slooow to germinate & grow. At that rate, maybe they'll be ready to plant in the Fall. I'll definitely check the big box stores this Spring to see if they have any Lisianthus plants available for sale. Thanks for your help Arlene & Loretta.
