Since I started a new garden last fall and knew it would look bare for several years, I scattered a bag of California native annual seeds around to provide some filler this year. The results were spectacular! The blooms started in March and we're now getting the last phase--in another month or so, the bare bones of the garden will be visible. One of the earliest was Platystemon californicus, or "Cream Cups". They are fully dried and (hopefully) reseeded by now.
The Nemesias--menzesii and maculata--are small and subtle, but make for great color. "Baby Blue Eyes"
"Five Spot"
Another early one is Collinsia heterophyllus, or "Chinese Houses". I never understood that common name, but it's a pretty flower.
One of my favorites was Phacelia campanularia, or "Desert Blue Bells". I have never seen a richer, deeper blue on a flower before.
In May came the Gilia capitata. I don't know a common name. This shot shows the Platystemon to the left, a budding lupine, a few California poppies, some Phacelia in the back, and the mounds of Clarkia yet to emerge.
The last to bloom are the Lupinus luteolus (yellow lupine) and the Clarkia amoena, aptly named "Farewell to Spring" as it ends the annual cycle in June. This Clarkia is a big plant--up to 2.5 ft tall, and variable in flower color. It's quite a stunning sight in bloom, and goes well with the Lupine here.
I imagine quite a few of these will reseed next year, and they will be quite welcome.

What a great way to fill in while you wait for your garden. There is nothing nicer than to go for a walk or hike and come to a field of wild flowers. Carol

You have a wonderful wildflower garden. I love the little nemesia's we get them here as annuals and they flower all summer. I've never heard of clarkia, I'll have to look that one up.
