I'm looking for a new annual to put in some containers on my front stairs (full sun) next spring. Something hardy that can tolerate the heat. I'm thinking about trying Vincas. (didn't care for petunias and don't like marigolds.) I would love to see pics/ideas of any potted plants you may have. I would like mine to flower all summer and to be full and bushy. Thanks all!!

Just keep them moist and they should do fine. Mine are thriving in full sun both in pots and in the ground. And they will last until frost.

Vinca is a great plant, Vicki, and is fairly drought tolerant. As Arlene suggested, however, they need more water in containers. There is a new (to me, anyway) annual that I've heard great things about, Millionbells (common name). It looks like a tiny petunia, but apparently just has an overabundance of blossoms -- hence, "million bells." Geraniums do well in pots and pansies are great throughout spring and early summer, but tend to peter out after that. Depending on the size of your container, you could plant the polyantha roses, or carpet roses. The blue annual salvia is a great annual and blooms all summer. Its spikey flowers provide good contrast to all pink, yellow, red, and orange blossoms, especially if those are rounded shapes.
