These are impatiens that are supposedly hybridized for growing in the sun, and are said to grow to knee-high in height. The website says Home Depot sells them. I've never seen them there, but I haven't looked for them either. I'm making some notes for 2008 in my to-date-unpublished garden journal.

I haven't seen them. I've always had luck growing the new guinea impatiens in sun though, which, thanks to you, I will try to make a note of for next year.
Sorry that doesn't answer your question but maybe someone else will see this now.

Hi Lovinlife,

I've grown Sunpatiens for the past two Summers, and they're really great for full sun and heat. They're easy to grow (2+ feet tall)and bloom continuously. One word of caution, they need to be watered DAILY (heavily much them too.) Their water usage is VERY HIGH.Three days in full sun and heat, without water, will just about do them in.Last year I took cuttings and over-Wintered some of them;however, those cuttings took them much longer to get going once they were planted in the Spring. I plan on planting them again next year.
Here are two of my plants from about a week ago:

Hi,

They are a modified version of the New Guinea impatiens;Plant name: Impatiens xhybridus

"What makes these SunPatiens so special is they are a new species – a cross between traditional New Guinea impatiens and a wild impatiens."

Probably the reason you haven't heard of them is because they are only sold at Home Depot and have only been available for two years.

Wow those are really cool. I just thought they were New Guineas. I have some of those (NGs) but I find they aren't really all that sun tolerant anyway and do better in part sun. I'll have to look for these nest spring at HD.

Hi Seil,

You'll enjoy them ;) A little pricey,but definitely eye-catching!

This year I planted some Vincas between the Sunpatiens, and they did well, getting some shade from the larger plants. I planted two SP's in large pots,on the porch, where they got afternoon sun and they did great too.

Bob, thanks so much. Your Sunpatiens are beautiful plants, and I agree that they're worth the trouble of over-wintering. I'm glad to get some first-hand knowledge of them. I do shop for plants at Home Depot, so I'll look for them next spring.

That one in the UK is huge! Beautiful too.
