This Rudbeckia Hirta, Indian Summer, decided to grow in the space vacated by a tomato on my dock. After I pulled up the dying tomato I noticed a very vigorous plant coming up with very hairy leaves. I was not sure what it was. The flower buds were just enormous so I did not suspect a Rudbeckia at all. The seed must have blown in or come from my compost pile. The flower is as big as a bread and butter plate. It has 4 buds on it. I really think it may be an annual the way it grew and flowered in just a very short time. I want to collect the seeds and give it it's own space next year so the tomato can come back to that sunny spot. Mary/Gainesville, GA

Now that's a plant worth anyone's space!

I love that one. I had four of them last summer, but they were killed during winter. Lucky you, to have a volunteer. Much prettier than a tomato (grin).

Those are wonderful. Don't you love it when you find surprises like this in the garden.
