2 October 2007 Passiflora Incarnata

http://meiwa.notlong.com/ 2 October 2007 Passion Flower. (Passiflora Incarnata)

This plant was grown from seed, started indoors in December 2006, and put outdoors in May 2007. It has flowered all summer, and there are always flowers present. The flowers last about two day. The fruit doesn't always form from every flower. The fruit has seeds and is rather pleasant to eat whole. If the seeds are removed before eating the outer thick flesh is insipid. This year I am going to leave it in situ to determine if it will over-winter outdoors. I am not too optimistic.

I have a passiflora that was a very small plant last summer, spent the summer outside, came in for the winter but with poor light conditions, and went outside again this summer. It is now a healthy plant, but in a pot and not nearly as large as yours. It is indoors again now, but in a sunny window. It has about six flowers now, and several new buds. I have never gotten to the fruit stage. Your photos are lovely, especially the one viewing the flower from the side.

In situ is a Latin phrase meaning in the place. It is used in many different contexts.

It's a beautiful flower. Do let us know next year if it makes it through the winter.
