I know that they don't need fertilizer and that they are late bloomers in the north, but does anyone in Zone 5 or colder have buds or flowers now? I have neither. I'd like to know when you do (even Zone 6ers, so that I can be on the lookout!) and also see your pretty pix.

Mine just started putting on a show a couple weeks ago. By the time I think to take a pic it's already too dark. And I'm never up early enough to catch them before they fold.

Ok, not great shots, but you get the idea. Hope my neighbor doesn't mind that they've climbed the fence and crawled into her shrub.

I had stopped growing them because here they start blooming just before the first frost of the season - too late. This year, my sis gave me one as a present and I've tried a different location - we'll see. Still a very late bloomer for my liking.

Whoa! How many Moon Vines do you have there? That is beautiful. It reminds me of Gardenia blossoms. Did you start those this year or can you leave them in the ground over the winter where you are? ..... I spied on the rest of your gardening album. The cat and bird garden art in your formal bed is a riot! What a lot of veggies! And in June? I'm so envious!

That's what I'm afraid is going to happen here, if they even get any buds in the first place. Have you ever tried to overwinter them inside? I'm thinking about trying that to see if they will bloom earlier that way. I wonder how hard they are to overwinter, though.

DJ, I'm not sure how many vines there are. I soaked a bunch of seeds and just stuck 'em in the ground probably in late March. I usually do that about the same time I transplant tomatoes.

Yeah, I get June tomatoes, but pay the price with miserable heat and humidity that lingers into October, lol. Btw, you should see those moonflower vines midday. They're a wilted mess like most things in the garden.

You are getting veggies about the time when I am transplanting mine (and Moon Vine) outdoors. HAHA! Ugh.

I hear you. I lived in Florida for a few years. I guess I should be glad I was in an apartment and only had enough room to raise Butterfly Weed, some bamboo, and a Sago Palm. If I'd tried to grow Moon Vine there, I'm sure I would have baked it and never tried again. Wish I could share some of my chilly weather with you right now.

Congrats! I have a few teeny tiny buds -- nothing as big as your's. And I started mine from seed REALLY EARLY this year. It doesn't seem to matter. Around here, they will just sit in the ground and won't even start climbing until the end of July and no first blooms until late August or September. *sigh* I see last year mine showed it's first bloom on August 17th. They are late this year!

While we are talking about annual vines, does anyone know how many morning glory plants would take to have a big display over a doorway like this:

http://www.maltedmedia.com/people/bathory/glory-arch.jpg

I assume morning glories are not like moonvines in that they climb (at least showing foliage) early in the season?

By the way, it is so exciting when the moonflowers open. It will take you by surprise, really. We threw a moonflower party here last year when our's bloomed!:

Oh, Charlene, that first pic is adorable! That Moonflower is just about as big as she is, and even next to you it still looks big. How exciting! I like that MG pic. I might have to try that around my front porch next year. Did you see MiMi's giant swath of MGs in another post? I think she said she sprinkled a handful of seeds to get it.

Ta-dah! I think I missed the fully open shot, although it looked just like this the following morning, too, so maybe it was a bit warped by the drought and never fully opened. I meant to get up and see it at 4:30 AM when my husband got up for work, but I forgot it was his day off and I ended up oversleeping. Haha! At any rate, if it hadn't been for this unbelievably warm stretch of weather we've had over the last few weeks, I don't think I would have seen any blossoms on it at all this year.

Look what I had this morning! I couldn't believe it. It even has a big friend and a little friend just beginning to bud beside it. Hooray!

DJ, you are one of those phabulous photographers! Those bud shots are gorgeous, and I'm afraid I would have a hard time choosing which ones to frame if I were an interior decorator at your house.

Charlene, your photos are so lovely with your little girl. A Moon Vine party: What a great idea, since they bloom at night, and their fragrance is so intoxicating.

Congratulations, D.J.!! Aren't they just a joy to find in the early morning? Your photos are lovely, too. Great job. Don't you think the blooms smell like a wonderful french soap? Here is my vine yesterday morning:

Thank you, Lisa, Gloria, and Charlene! Gloria, almost EVERY time I type your name, I somehow add a "d" in it and don't even realize it until I reread it: Glorida. I think your froggy is giving me flashbacks to Florida because he looks like he might be lounging on a poolside chair. I would so much like to join him, whatever he is doing.

That must be it because they remind me of a very lovely perfume... it would have to be French! I took those shots around 7:30 AM and can you believe it's almost 2 PM now and the flower is still open? We had very dense fog until 11 AM or so and now it is overcast. What luck!! Your flowers are so soft looking and it's truly amazing to see a vine with so many open at once. Just lovely!

I think I'd grow the vine just to get one bloom, just one night. (:

PS - everyone please come help me on the "advice" forum. I'd love to fix this area before Beni Maiko turns fall colors (which I hope it will!)
