I aquired a pk with 7 seeds left from my Dad's neighbour tonight ,in the evening went round to help her plant 400 assort plug plants that had been delivered to her.
She had some Bird of paradise seeds left so she passed them on to me to see if I can get them to germinate.
She did say they wont flower for 5yrs slow to grow.
Looking forward to seeing them germinate.
Glad she had a heater on in her greenhouse as its icy cold outside and blowing a severe gale.
Snow forecast Friday.

Kat, they can be very slow to germinate as well, so be patient! But what a wonderful plant.

Kath,

You were told right - they do take a long time to germinate and then flower. I have a S. nicolai, 8 years old, NEVER flowered. S.regina is easier but just as slow. I have several in pots that came originally from Madeira as small plants. They all flower profusely and (wonderfully) in the conservatory, usually around about Christmas time. If you get really desperate let me know. When I repot some in Spring I might be able to find an offset for you. Try this link.

These are very common around my city. Most are neglected but still manage to bloom. A 15 gl plant goes for about $65.00. I several of the giant version about 15 ft tall with blue and white birds.

I've been growing reginae for a while now and it flowers best in the UK in a greenhouse border I find. But I've planted one plant outside this year and I intend to keep the frost away by covering it up on cold nights. I'll let you know how I get on.
Ej, your really lucky to be able to grow these with no problems, temperature wise, especially those giant ones, is that nicolai? I 've not attempted that one, I wish you luck El Tel, eight years old, must be getting BIG now.
