In David's Pond, my goldfish are chasing each other. Mainly the males chasing the fat females. It is fun now to know which one are the males and females.

Unfortunately, our weather took a dip to 32 degrees so the fish aren't chasing each other right now. Plus I don't see any eggs, but that doesn't mean anything...lol.

I checked the pond's temp gage and the water is at 58 degrees and they love to eat. When they see me they all come a runnin'! I'll post a pic as soon as I take it.

My goldfish have made some babies. I've collected some creeping Jenny bunches that have eggs on them and have placed them in a tub separate from ravishing goldfish. Hope to have some good color combinations.

Well, my fishies eggs have hatched and I have babies in several tubs, because the fish keep spawning!

They are still doing it! I guess it is the warmth of David's Pond as it is sited on the south side of the house and is next to our basement wall. It is 4 ft deep and these fish are always hungry,
My lilies have started blooming in this pond too. Attraction,
chromatella, and I think I've got a Helvola coming up.

Due to my interests in Clematis my waterlilies have been put on the back burner, so I have to wait to see them bloom to recall what they are, as the labels get algae on them and I can't read the names.

Cheri, Every year our fish have babies. I see the fish chasing each other around the pond as the temps rise. But there have only been a few new ones every year. One year I took some pond plants down the street to a neighbour who does not keep fish. Soon she had little ones. The eggs must have been attached to the plants. If you know more about breeding I would love to know. When we lived in Vancouver, neighbours of our best friends were composting fish :(. They were so prolific there was barely room to swim. I have never seen anything like it - it was a big fear for me when we started our pond. We have goldfish and a few Koi and have not lost more than a dozen to natural causes or weather disasters in 6 or 7 years.

Lilybeetle,
That is great that your fish have lasted for so long!

I get babies every year, but probably could have had more if I paid more attention.

This time i just get a rag or water hyacinths or water lettuce or Creeping Jenny tied in bunches and hung them from a secure place where I know the fish would pass by. I'm too cheap to buy water hyacinths or lettuce from the pond places. Waiting for a garden buddie to trade with me or whatever.

But the Jenny did fine and I just put them in various small size tubs or buckets and wait for them to hatch.

I keep them in there for awhile until they are big enough to separate and put into a new clean bucket of water, since the babies are so fragile. Netting them usually kills them at this of age. so you just have to live with the algae growing in the bucket.

You could go through the tedious task catching them with a cup or glass, but that takes time adn patience. Which I tell myself when I'm doing that task and that there are better things to do with my time.

But it is the kid in me I guess that does it. Like being at the park's creek that have little minnows and polywogs swimming around.

Gradually the goldfish can go into a bigger size pot with waterlilies, grasses, creeping jenny, etc. Then this is when you can see the pretty colors coming out. That is the real fun part. since I have long finned shubunkins, sarrass comets, and regular goldfish with long fins.

Some gold fish are all white and look like an angel flowing through the water with its long finns so I'm excited to see if I get any combinations of this one. He is a male fish and has been very busy.

Kathryn, I'd sure love to see some pictures of your pretties! I have babies, and just pray I get more of the butterfly fins. Do you know when they start to appear?

HI Viola,
Sorry, I haven't responded yet. By the time the fish are about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch long then you can tell about the fins. That is how I can pick them out in a crowded fish tank at
a pet shop.

Then they grow nicely and have babies! LOL

They are usually the thinner ones where the tail looks longer. I look for in these fish, use to be 10 cents a piece, but those days are over. Maybe 6 for $1.00. For the bright red and white ones. They end up being sarassas comets. Or anything special like a bright red spot on the head or around the eyes.

I even look for shubunkins, the blue, black and red ones. They might just be in the tank where they sell these fish for people's snakes, turtles, etc.
