our glasshouse is constructed using tempered glass panels recycled from used sliding glass doors, it is 12'x12'
and at this time of the year, it becomes the center of my gardening activity. in the summer, the orchids have the place mainly to themselves, but when it gets cold outside, they have to share space with some other tropicals.
as you can see, we add supplemental heat with an oil filled radiator. :-) a couple of the orchids that are in bloom now

Your orchids are wonderful. I am green with envy that you have such a wonderful greenhouse. Up north here the wind is howling and the temperatures are dropping, that heater would be going forever.

What a wonderful place. I think if I had a greenhouse like yours (or any greenhouse for that matter) I'd be tempted to move in with the plants for the winter.

thank you both for your kind words, it is a spot that makes me very happy, and it'd be even better if there were space in there for a hammock *lol*

brrr, it sounds awfully cold up your way, terry, it's not too bad here yet, but that little radiator usually starts to get a serious workout in jan. and feb. we rarely see temps below the teens, so it's just enough heat to do the job, but, being the worrywort that i am, i do keep a spare one on hand for emergencies, and even a propane heater, in case of power outages. ~~ ellie ~~

Oh I envy you - when we sold our house in June I left my attached greenhouse behind....here I can't have a new one until the little guy outgrows the swing set and we can make room. I do intend to build a super cold frame though - I have a great window to use as a start. You have a wonderful collection of orchids there!!

Jak3, why not do a temp one with PVC and plastic? Due to ordinances and zoning laws here I can do a temp one during the months I need extra room and just take it down to store during the hotter months. I do it in sections so it can be easily setup and taken down. We thought about when the swing set is gone route but then came the grandbabies and it's still there. Decompost, no roof on this? You just cover with plastic during the winter months? Love the idea.

Karma how I wish I could do a temporary one and have it function in our cold climate! It would cut down on my light bills but still the heating of one would be, I believe, too much.

thanks for taking a peek into my li'l paradise :D when i opened the door this morning, i was nearly overwhelmed by a powerful and spicy (cinnamon-y) scent, one of the big catts has opened
Karma ~ it's hard to tell from the pix, but the gh is roofed with 6 more of the same tempered glass panels. we just always "winterize" the inside with 2mil plastic. the photo of the exterior was taken before we put the plastic up this year. hmmmmm, an open roof design really could be a cool idea, huh?? Jak ~ we also left behind an attached greenhouse when we moved to our present home :-( and for years i struggled trying to keep my green babies happy in our pit of a basement every winter. without my glasshouse i'd be nagging constantly to move to an even warmer climate, so i guess when he built it, dh did himself a big favor, too ;-). but, first things first, your adorable little guy needs his "rec" center, so you have a little time to make plans for your future "play" house. Terry ~ keep thinking creatively, there's bound to be a way . . . ~~ ellie ~~

http://community.webshots.com/photo/475506630/482111771qgJrFv Terryk the above is the redesigned one we have this year. We lowered it 2 feet due heating all that space but added 4 more feet as we did add to the collection. We keep this one at 50 to 55 this year and we also heat the old greenhouse and that one houses the orchids this year that one we are keeping at 65 to 70. I hear ya on the heating cost but according to DH it's better than having them all inside? I was limited to the hoyas and the black nana with a few others in the garage. I'll try to post a photos of the inside this weekend in the assignment forum. Ellie, thanks for the explaination as I wasn't clear on that. I'll be keeping this temp brug house open come spring, summer and fall.

This has me really itching for some type of greenhouse. Your temperature Karma must not get as cold as mine, correct? Last winter we had some really cold temperatures, down to -10 F several times. Even trying to keep a greenhouse in the upper 30's to 40 range would have to cost a pretty penney. Heating the house this year is going to be enough with the rise in heating oil prices. My main reason to do something other than my basement room is the watering of my cyclamen and hellebore plants. Right now I water a tray at a time at a work sink off in an other area of the basement. Then I can only do about 5 trays at a time because before I return them to the room the excess water has to drain. With my zone I am not even sure how it works watering plants in a greenhouse during winter. Do you land up with an ice skating pond underfoot?

Ellie , That is a great greenhouse . My DH brought home a bunch of secondhand sliders with the intentions of building me a greenhouse . That was many years ago , and the building never happened . He became too disabled to do it , and we can't afford to hire it done . I am still hoping that something will come to pass so I can have it built . I'd like it to be attached to the southeast side of our house . It would be entered from our diningroom . I guess I can continue to dream ....:-) What is yours floored with ? I was thinking mine would be graveled .
