I have made several of these little pods for potted plants and some propagation beds. I didn't want a single large structure for practical and aesthetic reasons and am fairly happy with how these appear at the edges of the landscape.

How do you control temperature and humidity?

They just serve as unheated cold frames EJ. No heating at all. The plants inside are all very hardy perennials, it's just added protection from wind and excess moisture etc. I receive some plants in winter while they are dormant, so this gives them less of a harsh beginning. The pods are very lightweight and can be propped or lifted entirely during warm spells if necessary, or if they need watering I just lift them off before a rain and then replace them later.

Yes Terry, I just built them. I have left potted perennials out through previous winters with mixed results. I'll let you know how it works out. I have somewhat of an expensive order coming in December and so hope this works for particular items.

Joe, I use a scaled down hoop-house. WSU has done quite a bit of research on them. http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublications/eb1825/eb1825.html

Dave do you have a picture of your hoop house and what were the things you changed. i.e; did you use something else for the hoops. Seems to me a person should be able to find something a little less expensive. At least here the PVC pipe seems quite expensive. Clayton

How did they do for you Joseph? How was it with the warm winter we had, did they overheat or did you constantly have to uncover them? Was watering a bit more of a chore than you expected? Did the plants do ok through the freeze we had?

How do you tie them down? ... or is wind not a problem?

Terry, they worked wonderfully. My plan is to make several of them to house blooming hellebores I want to breed and also for overwintering seedlings in pots. It is very helpful for pollinating as you can keep the plants isolated from other groups etc. The seedings inside are considerably larger than those in the open garden. Watering etc wasn't a problem. I opened it maybe three times to let rain in which was enough. On warm days I would open to let fresh air in, basically just propped a bucket under one side. Valia, it can be fairly windy here, but these are heavier than they look, and since they are short they function more like a barge at sea... very stable. If they were as tall as they are wide it would probably be more of a problem. More of a problem would be snow for those of you who get it. A different design (for example a tunnel) would be more appropriate to deal with the weight of fallen snow.

Thanks for updating Joseph. I think I would need a tunnel type set up.
