We are in the process of planning a greenhouse! I am interested in knowing if any of you have built your own without a kit! DH thinks that is a better way to do it (however he is handy but SLOW) I think we should start with a kit and build an addition to it! Any thoughts on this??

If your DH is handy and he'll do it, that's great. If we hadn't built a kit, it would never have happened. I got my guys to help with the base/foundation but I did most of the rest of it myself. And it only took a couple of weeks, including the foundation. You know, he'll get plenty to fool with doing the foundation, heating, (wiring, water if you add it) even if you do a kit.

Cathy, He's Handy but soooooo SLOW! I am expecting so I won't be much help with the heavy stuff! I just think we won't get it done either if I don't buy a kit!!!

Pri, I can relate to your feelings about DH being so so slow. I have the same problem here, but my DH does work 7days a week and he hardly has time for anything. Makes it difficult. It took him 2 years to put a heater in our closed-in patio, (which by the way, I'm thinking (just thinking) of seeing if I can convert it to a greenhouse)!! Maybe the kit would be the better way to go, unless you go with him to the store to get all the materials necessary to do the job (maybe, just maybe that would work).

We bought an old greenhouse slated for demolition and DH redesigned it and built it attached to our house. It took him one whole winter of reading about solar heat etc. to design it, and 6 months to build it. However, it is very solid, very attractive, very functional, and a real plus as an addition to our house, although we can only use it for three seasons. My DH doesn't work fast either, but researching, designing and building it was as much a treat for him as having it now is a treat for me. He simply enjoyed the challenge! How "into" this project is he? My DH found the time because he was really interested in doing it, not just for me, but as something that was fun to do. If your DH isn't really enthusiastic about the project, you might do better with a kit!

If you look back at my threads "Spring Greenhouse" and "Why I am looking ofr Greenhouse Heat" you will see what DH built from the old one.
