Thanks for the hope. It was so cold here that even the iris leaves don't look good. Now that spring has arrived your pictures have me so impatient. The yellow iris that appears in several pictures, are they all "unknown" irises? I am looking for a yellow/white combo.

The yellow in the immortality picture background is "Buckwheat", but that and the unknown variety is all that is blooming now. Might I recommend "Melted Butter". It is my favorite white and yellow iris. Here is a picture from last year. This picture doesn't even do it justice. I really think it is a spectacular iris.

'Melted Butter' is just what I imagined. I quickly googled and realized, other than Schreiner's, I don't know a good company to search. Any ideas?

I get just about all of my irises from the iris society sale locally, so I don't know what mail order places might be best, Eileen. Sorry.

Thanks. Holy Fire is my favorite of the ones that have begun to bloom now. It is a huge sturdy flower, and just shines in the garden. This time of year is so exciting.

Alice, generally, how long do bearded irises live? (I have some small ones from my Dad's garden---1950's). Not spectacular at all--mostly sentimental. Do the bigger iris plants die sooner?

How long do bearded irises live? The answer is forever and only one year. An single iris rhizome will flower just once, then babies are produced at its side and the cycle continues. The blooms are always on new growth. That is why it is recommended that they be dug every few years to throw away the old rhizomes and make room for the new growth.
