I've dug up and divided some of my irises. Right now the ones that I didn't replant are in my garage. How long can they stay unplanted?

A long time! I've heard of some that lay high and dry for a year, then grew away like nothing was wrong when they were finally placed in the soil.

That's interesting. I have two that are sitting in a box looking pretty bad, maybe I should try potting them up to see if any growth appears.

One year winter hit us unexpectedly with a lot of snow. I had some irises in the yard that I had not had time to plant, so I just left them there until spring. Would you believe that I found them sprouting in April after being covered with snow and ice all winter? I could hardly believe it.
