I have tried for years to get great dirt with topsoil and compost and my dirt is still so hard water runs off. I can not dig it do to back problems and am looking for additives. My husband tills it every spring around the perennials but it goes right back to hard soil a week later. Suggestions?

Have you heard of Lasagna Gardening? The layers of this method refers to the brown leaves, green grass clippings, newspapers & manure that you place where you want the soil improvements. No tilling, no shoveling....The natural decomposition and the worms will do all of the hard work. There is a book "Lasagna Gardening" that gives much greater detail.

We have a compost type product here that is called Clay Buster and one called Soil Prep. I deal with alot of clay here. If I do not amend the soils with something fairly heavy duty it too will go hard and shed the water. The two products above have made huge strides in changing my garden areas. Most of the garden areas I have are finally to the point where I can use regular finer compost. Give the clay buster stuff a try if you have it there, and use lots of it too. Stan
