I had a lot of old rail road ties left over when we got new stairs put in. They were not really good enough to use for much so I decided to make a raised bed out of them for seeds that I am starting.
I decided to try some 'lazagna' type gardening to fill in the space before I buy more dirt.
I lined the bed with newspapers and have been adding leaves, kitchen scraps, shredded paper and some dirt. While it is "cooking" I am using the space to put my Winter Sowing containers so that the dogs can't knock them over again.
This is what I recycled:
the RR ties
leaves
the newspaper
the kitchen scraps
the paper shreds from work
dirt from digging a hole
and
the milk cartons

That should turn into a nice bed over time Mary. Will this be a new hellebore seed bed someday?

I used a birch tree that had seen better days and I made this my sides to the bed. We had a tree trunk ground up about a year ago and the soil and shredded tree had been sitting so I used it for the new bed and it now is home to some of my cyclamen. The soil seems to have good drainage which they need.

Have fun with your new seed bed.

This bed looks very good and whatever you decide to plant there should be very happy.

Yes Terryk, I have hellebore seeds that are right now germinating in some flats. I wanted to put them into an area where I could keep an eye on them and now get them mixed up with other things. I am going to divide this area with little fences so that I will know where I put things for a change.
