I have a nice big glazed pot and would like a statement plant to go in it and thought about a shrub. Something that would be interesting all year round and wouldn't grow too big. Any suggestions?

I've been thinking of doing the same thing myself Ann. I have a large glazed pot, unfortunately blue (may clash with other colours).

How about an acid loving plant, which is ideal if you can't grow them in your garden; possibly a variegated rhododendron, or a pieris. I saw a pieris recently with gorgeous bright red flowers....but cant remember the name.

Perhaps it could be underplanted with seasonal annuals/bulbs for all year round colour.

I am growing a flowering quince (Chaenomeles) "Jet Trail" in a container. It's low growing, almost prostrate, in habit, with white flowers. It's deciduous, but has an attractive branching habit to make it interesting in winter. I also have Caryopteris "Petit Bleu" in a container, with creeping thyme around its feet. Caryopteris is late to leaf out--mine is only now growing tiny little leaf buds--so you have to make sure you like the looks of a naked plant all winter. I think I'll change that container, and put something with winter interest--a dwarf conifer, perhaps some ornamental grass--in addition to the thyme. You could also try a small azalea; I've grown "Hino Crimson" and "Ptarmagan" in containers. Hino Crimson is evergreen, very sun tolerant, has small, dark green leaves, and bright red flowers. Even when it's not in bloom, it's a pretty, little shrub.
