I would like to try to grow some brugs in containers. Anyone here tried this, or does this, let me know how big a container you think I need and how did they do for you? I know where I live they will have to be taken in each year and overwintered inside. But I figure what the heck my house looks like a greenhouse in the winter time anyway, a few more plants can`t hurt!!

Hay there posygal, yep you sure can ! I grew them this year for the first time in large clay pots ,16" . I ordered my online. Their called "cassie's curls" With beatiful yellow blooms. they bloomed like crazy. I used terreacotta just cause I like the look of these pots. but remember their heavy, which can make the a bear to move! I'm overwintering mine down in the laundry room. but you may want to use plastic pots or something more light weight,it's just personal preferance. Mine got full sun with late afternoon shade during the growing season and did just fine ,watered daily ,sometimes twice a day and fertilized once a week. I got some pictures I'll try to get some posted soon. I started with a fairly large pot for the size of plants { they were in a 3" nursury pot when I got them} , and they did great, grew really quick. alot depends on the size of plants when you get them,I tend to go alittle large, you can always transplant later if you need too,{if the plant out grows it's currant pot, gets rootbound ,etc.} hope this helps.......Mike

Thanks for the heads-up on the brugs. I will deffenetly have to go with the lighter pots. Hoope they smell as good as the daturas I grow. When they`re in bloom in my garden, my whole yard smells heavenly! Well those and the wisteria vine, make it smell wonderful.

I've had the brug-bug for 4 years now and have grown them everywhich way.
Unless you have the light and want to keep the plants growing in your house, it'll be easier just to take cuttings each fall and start new plants. If you want to start with a large standard each year then in the fall before frost damage, you can cut a large main trunk off just above ground level. Remove all leaves and prune it back so you can get it in the door then let it set in water in the cold basement over winter. Next spring plant it back in the ground and away you go.
Another way... You can have your plant started in a smaller pot, 1-3gal, then when danger of frost is gone, just sink that pot in the ground where your rim is about 2" above ground. That Brug will send roots out the drainage holes. In the fall, just run your spade down around the sides of the pot, slicing the pot free from the external roots. Then you can set that potted plant in the non-freezing dark area with just a hint of water once in a while. Let it go dormant. Next spring, you can take the pot off, trim roots back a little, repot and stick it right back in the ground.
Sinking nursery pots in the ground makes it a lot easier than having stakes and guy-wires to keep above ground pots from blowing over.
This is 'Harlot' which was in a ceramic pot this year. Under potted and during the heat I had to water twice a day but this is her second flush back in Sept.

Hi Posey,
This is the first year I've planted brugs in containers so we will see how it goes.(say three months ago) Last winter we did not have one freeze. Not sure if we will be as lucky this year. I'd like to know what others have to say about container brugs as well.
