The last two years I have had red lily beetles feasting on my Oriental lilies. On David B's recommendation, I tried spraying with Neem Oil this spring. I have had a few beetles, but nothing like I had last year, and the lilies are looking good again. It cost me about $10 Canadian for a little bottle, but it dilutes to two tsp. per litre and I spray it on about once a week. A litre will last me about two weeks. From other threads, I think it would also work on things like aphids and maybe those little green worms that eat up the ferns and columbines too. Neem Oil is organic and non toxic to people, so is one of the safer products for us to use. Thanks David, it works!

Julie, I'm glad you had good results with it. It also works on mealy bugs, scale, powdery mildew, black spot, and other problems. You can even use it in your watering can for treating soil-based pests.

Where can you buy this? I don't remember seeing it at HD or Lowe's. Is it common at most garden centers? Such good info to pass on...thanks!

Can you use this on butterfly weed? Or will it kill the butterflies? Because I have aphids ALL OVER the stuff, and it will definitely die if I don't do something soon.

Venusxmantrap, Use a hard spray of a water hose and knock them to the ground. They can't get back on the plant. It works and its the most environmentally friendly way. Candis

Neem oil is a deterrent but it breaks down too fast in my experience. I like the fish based horticultural oils, plus they offer a nitrogen boost. Organitrol is a good one. Not sold in stores, go to www.organitrol.com

For those of you who are interested here is an article from one of my favourite nurseries on neem oil. They have phenomenal display gardens. Just a wonderful place to visit and really good info too. http://www.rcgardens.ca/factsheets/factsheets/neem.html

I tried Neem oil, and it didn't seem to have any effect at all. The flea beetles killed the plants sprayed in Neem oil. I haven't found anything that will get rid of the flea beetles. I may end up just giving up gardening.
