What kind of spider is that? I know that Australia harbours the funnel web and a small, painful spider (plus tarantulas)..what is this one?

It is called a Huntsman spider, fairly harmless but they get very big and anything with hairy legs must stay outside.

I heard of that one too. There's also a "mouse" spider? Really, really ugly and hairy too....Australia sure has more than its share of creepy crawlies!!! We just have to watch out for the brown recluse..it's bite can give you flesh eating disease so I'm careful about wood piles etc. I am terrified of spiders as much as I like them...love the portia one...but just faint dead away if I find a big one anywhere on me. I cultivated a raspberry spider because then I knew where she was. She was huge...black and white stripes with a big armoured shell on her back and she also bites but unless you're allergic, no real problem. Luckily, we only have harmless and lovely garter snakes and I am not afraid of snakes. I keep looking at that huntsman.....ohoooooooo...shiver!!!! That one's at leat 15 minutes worth a faint-time!

LOL!!!!! That is so funny but obviously a good line to draw. We have none of the scary creepies that either of you have. I think I would have to change career if we did. I do try to learn about and recognise all the beneficial insects that frequent my garden and also to recognise then at their various stages of development. I garden organically and use the spiders/ladybirds/hoverflies/lacewings etc. to my advantage as much as possible.

My raspberry spider (Gloria) usually comes back each year in exactly the same spot but it's been 4 years now and am a little concerned about lifespan. However, if she's there, I'll pjotograph her....surely she left a baby or two behind! (altho I searched and never did find any) We also have many, many "box" spiders in late summer in the blackberries...not eactly attractive but I tested them and they are NOT aggressive in any way or manner so I love blackberries more than I fear these guys (they get to be about 1-1 and half inches, grey spotted/striped) but I still have a heart stop when a biggy gets on my sleeve. Near the end of September, I often find empty webs meaning they are so big and easily spotted the birds pluck them easily from their webs. Sort of sorry about that. I'll get a picture of one this year....it'll likely be as gruesome looking as the huntsman..maybe we just get used to the common things??? Haven't fainted once in a blacberry bush!

LOL It is a face!!! Good imagination! Just for accuracy, in B.C. we don't have the brown recluse, rather, we have the HOBO and BLACK WIDOW. I was wrong..........
I make blackberry jam, juice, preserves, wine and I freeze them. Do you know that they have twice the antioxidants of blueberries? We keep lots of bushes around and I even planted "Black Satin", a thornless one that is both prolific and tasty. One year I picked 300 pounds of them (myself).
