I've noticed white scale ?, I suppose, on the stalks of my brugmansias. I do not use insecticides or herbicides(ph) in my garden. 1. Is this scale? 2. If not what then. 3. What can I use naturally to rid of this.

Hmm... doesn't appear to be but I could be wrong. Try removing one, I noticed that the hard scale will pop right off. The soft ones smoosh.

Hmm... it could be a form or mealy or soft scale. Really hard to tell. If it's only on a few stems I would try using rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and gently wiping it off(at least thats what I use for soft scale and mealies) or you can try an oil based product like Neem, this is supposed to suffocate the adults and kill the young. I had hard scale on a plant and I just, cut it back and then gently scraped them off with the blunt end of my garden cutters.

Hi Duckie, It appears scale? is on all of the stems of my brugs. I don't want to cut them all back as I've been nursing them since last fall. Some will be blooming soon. I may try the rubbing alcohol thing. I do not use chemicals in my garden but would try the alcohol. Do you think the scale will affect my plants if I leave it on? Thanks

My plants seemed OK but got it early on.. It will start kind of looking ugly, I am not sure what the long term affects are of them. My fuchsias survive white fly as long as I feed them. The scale will spread tho if you don't care of it now... the long term affects could be bad

Hi Duckie, Well, I've not addressed the issue, unfortunately. They are holding on but can and should be doing a lot better.

Don't wait too long, take it from someone who knows. Next thing you know it will spread to other plants, had to throw one of them away as it was too infested to save :(

Do Not spray with alcohol - I tried this as an easy way out and killed all of my plants....I think the alcohol burned them. I had much better luck using a Q-tip dipped in alcohol and toughing eash spot...Neem is a natural pest remover that does not harm the environment. It is the sap (I think) of the Neem Tree.

Jak, Good point, I put the alcohol on a cottonball and gently rub. Hmm... with gloves on a cotton ball of neem would work great too I bet. Hmm...
