We are not pleased to see that this pest has reached us this year and is ruining our day lilies. Although I want to save the planet and use sprays sparingly does any body know of a way of killing these things before they ruin the buds. I see that it is recommended to pull of effected buds but what good is this.

Joy of joys lily beetle has also got to us this year and my frits were eated to shreds.

Regularly pick off and destroy any buds that are affected as you inspect the garden. That is the only control currently available.

Tony looks like I have them here in Hampshire too. Only one variety seems to be suffering (can't remember the name...its purple.)
Found this info, on RHS site, of daylilies that may avoid the egg laying stage;

moira

thanks for that information.Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been on holiday and just had a quick visit into hospital.It is sad to find a list of resistant varieties when we already have a small collection of about 20 none of which appear on the list. I picked of all the swollen buds and now all the late develpoing buds are flowering as normal.I suppose this may be the answer until some cure is found

Tony, see my posts in Aquilegias. My day lilies have not been affected so far. This columbine pest seems to have evolved in parallel with the
day lily one, but in different part of Europe, I have seen it mentioned only in continental Northern Europe, in Sweden since 1989. I have had it for two years now, and this year I am planning to try a systematic insecticide as it should work "from inside" the plant. I have never used anything stronger than pyretrine, but now either the bugs or the columbines will go! As you said, it is not a great idea to pick off the buds before blooming. Will report if this works for me. The only systematic imsecticide here in Finland is imidacloprid, sold under name Provado (in US at least as Merit). Fingers crossed....
