Can anyone identify what has killed my tomato plant? It has some kind of white stuff on the base of it and the plant wilted within a day. Here is the base of the tomato plant:
This is what the leaves looked like then they wilted:
The plant was full of tomatoes just about ready to ripen. Darn.

Bacterial wilt, maybe? To identify bacterial wilt, cut and peel back a section of the epidermis and bark above the soil line. In the early stages, the center of the stem will appear water soaked & later on it will turn brown and hollow. You can also diagnose it by cutting a portion of the affected stem and placing it in a container filled with water. Watch for a white milky ooze. That ooze could be the white stuff on the base that you mentioned. Sorry to say, there is no cure for bacterial wilt. Discard the plant in the trash and plant other crops. Susceptible ones include tomato, peppers and potatoes; maybe a few more but I cannot remember. Luis
