I don't know how this happened seemed overnight... rule #1 if you see ants on your plant that almost always means trouble!! So here is what I have a black hard scale on my chinese lantern and the other plant posted below, keep forgetting it's name
The plants are totally infested. What do you think will help? A systemic? Will they die with the first frost? I just cannot seem to find much info on what will get rid of them once they are adults. Scraping off might work for the Chinese lantern but not the other plant. Any help is appreciated!

Hi DW, I surely wish I could help but scale is something that has confounded me in the past. About the only thing I could think of would be to use the Bayer systemic insecticide that I use on my roses. It does keep the insect population down of them and might take care of the scale but I don't know for sure.

Check into spray oils: neem/superior oil during growing season; and dormant oil in winter to suffocate them.

Chicken, Thanks I have some of that!! And since it's on a plant the hummers drink from it's probably a good idea to use something that's not harmful. I also have a systemic fertilizer I am feeing as well. The plant I posted above is going to the dumpster, it's just too far along I think to get it under control. I will just buy another one :) Does scale live in the soil too??
