I have these awful little pests on my Asiatic lilies. Unfortunately, I currently cannot access my drives so I can't post a photo of them. They are bright red, no markings, easily visible. They are very rude, shamelessly procreating in full view. They can fly a short distance. If disturbed they fall to the earth on their backs, their undersides are dark so they virtually disappear. They lay tiny orange eggs on the underside of the lily leaf and they hatch into slimy little worms. The worms are voracious, and cover themselves with poop to be disgusting and to protect themselves. These guys will completely destroy a lily in half a day. I go out twice a day and pick them off and stomp viciously on them (much to the amusement of my family). If you knew how much I hate to touch slimy things, you would be proud of me for this. I also spray every day with Safer's End All. If I keep this up every day for a week, I am rewarded by about one day with no sightings. I am thinking of digging up my 104 lilies. Or covering them with a floating row cover to see if I can keep the devils from flying over from my neighbour's yard. Any other suggestions?

Does it look like this Julie, if so you do have 'lily beetle',
Luckily up until now I haven't had these pests, here's a link - advice from RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0500/beetle.asp Just found another bit of info: "Material of choice for treating flowers is neem, a newly registered insecticide based upon extracts from the neem tree. Neem can be purchased at garden centers under the trade names Turplcx, Azatin EC, Margosan-0, Align, and BioNeem. Neem kills larvae and repels adults. Neem is most effective on first instar larvae; it must be applied every 5-7 days after egg hatch."

Thank you Kath - these are indeed the devils. Last summer I had them late in the summer. This year the beetles appeared before the lilies!! I will see what I can find with Neem. I don't know what there is available in Canada.

Julie, you can also check a number of the organic rose treatment products which often contain neem, as it is effective on powdery mildew and black spot as well (it really is great stuff..it's the only thing I use). I see a number of references online to sales in Canada (and its approval by Health Canada as an insecticide) so hopefully you'll be able to find some and get these nasty critters under control.

Oh thanks - I will do that today. Those products should be easier to find here, and multi-use stuff is always welcome!

I have about 6 or 8 of them on my back garden. Maybe 12 or so lilies back there yellow and orange rated low on the color scale. I tooke their pictures. They could have them but not my pink lillies. Now I have noticed babies http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/nighs/2005/gard5204fffbb.jpg I'm thinking I'll cut off leaves of larva and spray with olive oil? but first I'll cut of these larva thing into small jar and dispose of somehow. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/nighs/2005/eggs5420.jpg

I had a hard time with these little buggers this year. I apply Seven once a week or so, at least after it rains. More because I tend to water every day. It took two days of treatment with Seven to get rid of them and I haven't seen them since.

Just to let New England gardeners know, the red lily leaf beetle has invaded my garden in Manchester, Vermont - haven't heard of sitings in Vermont yet. Working now on finding a source of Neem product locally. These guys are a true menace to lily gardens! Be on the look out.
