I have previously asked about aphid control at the gardening forum and someone gave me a recipe to control them but I... silly me... didn't write it down. Now I have a problem with ants putting the aphids in my fuchsia plant where sprays cannot reach them. I also know that humming birds like the fuchsia. Of course blooms don't last forever but the ants seem to know and just move the young aphid to another healthy new bloom. I can't really get to these guys and I don't want to spray poison into the bloom. Last time I just pulled all the blooms off and then sprayed the plant with Volk Oil. Now they are back :(, at least the white fly seem to have settled down some but aphids persist to be a problem. Just an FYI this is what the blooms look like. It's the top part inside is where the aphids are and as you can see the humming birds do like the flowers :)

Wonderful photos DW, wish I could have humming birds on my fuchsias I find a soft soap solution successful for destroying aphids, One or two drops in 2 pints of water. I use Stergene or Woolite, normally used for washing your woolly jumpers in. Spray once a week when there is no sun on the plants. Make sure you spray on the underside of the leaves, that's usually where you will find the heaviest infestation.

Kath, Is that safe for hummers? b/c I will have to spray inside the blooms to get to those tricky little aphids. I have tried dish soap before but that was not good for the fuchsia even with a rinse.

You can also use *Ultrafine* oil spray. It works like a charm and is safe for the hummers, too.

Wanda, I just purchased some Neem for my Abutilon (sp), the white flies have decided to take residence on it *grrr* . Do you think that would work? and be safe for the hummers? The Fuchsia's are white fly free... for now I am getting ready to cute them back and spray them with Volk oil. But the Abutilon is another story.

Should be okay. Neem is fairly non-toxic too.

You can use cannola oil like a summer superior oil - that would be safe for hummers. My hummers are definitely early-to-bed types: wonder if you sprayed after dusk the stuff would dry overnight so hummers would get less of it in the am? Also, Rose Pride makes an aerosol spray for getting bugs like aphids off your blooms - I think it sort of quick-freezes them. That might be easier to get into your flowers. If it's safe for rose blooms probably would not hurt your fuschia - not sure if there are any precautions for birds.
