This orchid is Oncidium Mssa. Shelob 'Tolkien.' The original image was taken with a beat-up cardboard box as a backdrop:
By the time this version was developed, the cardboard box had been "cleaned up" and turned into a fairly boring, yet neutral backing for the orchid:
The latest version involved a bit more "tweaking".... by way of blackening the background.... which produced this more "dramatic" image:
Here is a detail from the latest version:
Did the work produce a desirable result??? Has the flower's image been improved by the change in background?

IMHO, The black ground may be too dark especially with such a dark flower. If my failing memory serves, the AOS photographers use a neutralish blue coloured background as it fits in better to show off more flower colour range.I see the sepals as being slightly lost on such a dark ground. Please remember that this is only myopinion, and as such does not hold that much weight, as I am partly colour blind anyway. Please do not over react to this critisism, but take it in the constructive motive which it is given. I might suggest that you may wish to look at some proper orchid pics on AOS site to see if I do in fact have my opinion correct?

Please, ignore my previous comments, I have just looke at aos site, and they mainly use black. However I still think that on darker flowers, a lightish blue would be a better option?

Thanks, Mark, for your comments. I've looked more carefully at this photo... and I'm going to experiment with background color. I agree that the black could look pretty severe and detract from the flower. As much as I like Orchids, I am disappointed in AOS and will not pay much attention to them. They requested photos from me on one occasion, and then refused to return calls or emails regarding them. I have no way of knowing if these photos were ever used by them, but I did not appreciate their smug, pompous way of dealing with me.... and with friends of mine who have contacted them in the past. Too bad too.... I would enjoy a relationship with an Orchid organization or club. Guess I'll just stick to Garden Buddies.

Oops, I did not think that the Aos would be just like the NZOS types we have here. It would appear from what you say that you too have the superiortists in that place. We grew orchids here some years ago, but eventually got sick of the $ attitude, and the personal politics and old boys club mentality. Don't get me wrong, not all of the heirarchy were like that, but too many were. It even spoild the world orchid conference we went to... so and so is retiring... lets give him a gold medal then... never mind,... that was only a rumor of retirement. I should not gripe though, I guess that is the human psyche, to look after yourself rather than aim for the truth, and encourage others. Any way, enough, Try a lighter blue colour, for the darker flowers, but not too light. If it is too light then it may affect your exposure thingys but try a fairly neutral colour?

John, I don't post here very often, but I've been admiring your orchid pix. I also like the less dark, 2nd background. For some reason, to my eyes, the color brightened up the yellow tips, where the black kinda lost them. (Does that make sense?) I keep a few pieces of fabric on a curtain rod, ironed and ready. I do have to admit, black is the one I use most.
