As I have not had any experience with orchids I figured who better to ask then my fellow garden buddies. My daughter is getting married in July and she would like the table centerpieces to be those tall eiffel tower bud vases with a stem of orchids. My questions is will they hold up (stems to fragile to hold up the bloom), do they have any pollen messes as in lilies and which variety do you recommend I ask the florist for if she wants a dark magenta pink in the flower?

Orchids make great cut floweres. I have mostly phalenopsis, and the stems of those hold up fine. I have not had any problem with falling pollen. They will stay nice for a few weeks. I don't know what to suggest, but the florist should know. Should look beautiful on the tables!

Dendrobiums are sold here, regularly at the Farmer's Market, out on the street from canvas booths.

I have on specific Cymbidium that holds it's flowers for over 6 weeks. I have the same species that the flowers don't even last 7 days. The difference is the color of the flowers only. I'm not sure why the dark burgandy/chocolate one drops so quickly, but I do know it is a fairly rare color and perhaps I just ended up with a less desirable hybrid.

I had my first lily bouquet for the holidays this year, and I so can see the concern for the pollen. I had been snipping them off into my hand, and later I couldn't figure out why my hand was orange and soap wouldn't clean it!

Good luck with your plans.
