First of all, let me say that I am not an avid gardener. I love plants, but don't really know how to keep them alive (obviously). I bought a couple of orchids from my local Lowe's this last fall. They were clearanced b/c they had stopped flowering-- so-- very cheap, but still green and healthy looking. They've lived all this time, still being green and healthy, until now. The leaves are still very green and growing, but the actual stalk (I'm sorry if that's not the right word...I hope you know what I mean though!) has lost it's color and looks dead. What should I do with them? Does that mean it's just on its way out, or can I do something to make it flourish again?

I forgot to mention they're phalaenopsis orchids. Right now they're potted in plastic containers that are inside clay pots. Should I re-pot them in just the pots? This is what they're doing: http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h281/constantine03/Picture292.jpg http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h281/constantine03/Picture293.jpg http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h281/constantine03/Picture294.jpg

Your orchids are doing great! The stem (spike) is what the flowers were on and now it is done. Look for a place on the old stem that seems to be a kind of joint (called a node) and cut the stem back to there. Your plants may send out a new spike from that point and flower again. In time they will likely grow a new spike and flower for you.

Ah! Okay. Thank you! Does it matter how far down I cut it off? It's pretty well brown and deadish all the way to the leaves.

I have cut mine down right to the plant if necessary. I give mine a half=strength fertilizer recommended for orchids about every second week, and they soon grow a new spike. Good luck!
