SK, do you know the breed, the family, anything? It is tough to give orchid info with information first. Just a species would help a lot. I grow a couple of orchids I've had to fumble around with, since not one else grows Eulophia... Look at the tag, check the flowers and describe then, as in detail as you know how! Good luck with an addictive plant!

With good care she may eventually never be out of flower. She is a phalaenopsis by breed, a hybrid. they like reasonable warmth, about 15 degrees celcius minimum night temperature. They usually are regarded as a shady orchid, so not for full sun in the window. Also, NEVER allow water to sit in the centre of the plant, a fairly quick death will be the result. Do not let it sit in water, but dont let it dry out either. I used to grow in pine bark, but anything would be okay as long as it allows for quick draining and will not waterlog. I believe the chinese used to swear by women's hair?

I now only have three flowers left on my beautiful orchid but no sign of any new growth. What should I do to get new growth please?

It will continue to grow , when it wants, as new leaves in the centre. Eventually, one day it may produce a pup, but dont hold your breath waiting. When you trim back the flower stems leave at least the first node )(bumpy thing on stem) as this may produce a pup, otherwise known as a keiki. If the stem dies right back, then carefully cut it off. Remember, these are fairly slow growing without massive amounts of heat- at least in the late 20 degrees c. the plant may well have a little rest after flowering, this is normal.

Scotcat, I would suggest that the new growths, are, in fact more flower stems. It really is quite rare for the plants to throw off babies. I had about 20 or something phallies, and never had one throw a baby, but flower stems yes, most definately.

Sorry for misreading you, Scotcat. I would think about fertilising about once a month, more often if it is growing strongly. However, the food should be rather weak, and of a low nitrogen type. If orchids in general are forced, then it often makes them succeptible to collapse for the least reason. I too love the Paph. It looks like a species, or near species hybrid, but I'm not sure. Be careful when watering it, because if you get water sitting in the middle that will kill them real quickly.

Thank you Markvs for the compliment. I think I now have it down to a fine art of how and when to water and feed. A ? from my son the orchid I gave him dropped its firs tbllom this morning and second flower just about to burst into bloom. He is asking what to do with first stem, cut back or leave well alone.

On the paphiopedilum you can very safely cut back the stem, as this type never reflowers on an old stem. Also you can expect the flowered growth to slowly die off. As with other types of plants they only flower once per growth. The important thing, then is to hopefully get a new growth before this happens. As both growths have now flowered, we will have to wait for a new growth. Do not panic, however, as , from memory it takes a few years for the flowered growth to die off, but I am not sure about this.
