I second Mara's advice. I am of the opinion that almost everyone, if not everyone, is aware of the circumstances. There are other sites that don't ask for money. If people here feel they are being pestered you will alienate them. Get the advertising up and running. Find a way to fix the connectivity issues.

Renewal for most veterans here is in the spring and hopefully that will take care of the second quarter, at least. By then, we might know which advertising format will be implemented.
And there are plenty of websites that do, especially when upgrades in servers are needed for growing forums.

LOL ... connectivity! If you knew how many times I've heard that word in the past month. Nothing to do with GB and I probably shouldn't even say anything, but it's been a big part of our life recently as we fight a greedy developer who wants to impact our old neighborhood in a major way with an extremely dense TND. Not opposed to the concept, just the density. Anyways, carry on.

Well, I do enjoy web work but the business is involved in my interest here (got to be honest). I'd like Brushwood to have a visible presence at GB. You have a strong clematis forum.

I think you'll find a lag time there. Right now though April will be the best time to attract sponsors in the northern hemisphere. If you try to get them in July, they'll be more likely to say "call me in December".

Ej...I've been talking to DH (Carl) about your spam problem. He has had to deal with this kind of problem before at work. He has switched from Sendmail to Postfix. He says the config files are easier to deal with. It still took several hours looking up stuff on Google to get it set up right. He doesn't think he would be much help...but I think he might. He at least understands the problem.

Cathy I thought about this and is on my list of things to do. Currently I am getting over 20,000 return emails from forged senders per day. I set up a temporary email acount to forward them to instead of having them build up on the server. This seems to have fixed the problem for the moment. I'm checking on how to delete them at the server level which will completly solve our sendmail problem. Also I will be adding more memory next week.

EJ, First let me give you a huge THANK YOU for all you are doing to keep this site going. I know it can be a big monkey on your back. I can't imagine having to do all that you do to let us play here. I love the donate graph showing how much is still needed. Great idea. (Why doesn't it show up in this thread?)

I didn't mean that we should wait until third quarter, just that the spring membership is an upcoming receivable that might pay for the second quarter.

I am sending my 2008 donation today. I don't need web space, as I have my own web site where I can store pictures. I have supported Gardenbuddies, because I think it is good, and helpful. I have found a couple of other sites that I felt were worthy of support. One, that I think you should look at (and, maybe, even contact them) is: http://www.bananas.org/ While it is, more or less, specific to bananas, they have a lot of good features, even more than we have here. The membership is about a quarter of what it is here, but it is very active. They have some small ads at the top, but nothing annoying. When I couldn't find any palace to make a donation, I did a search of that, and came up with a thread, where someone else had asked the same thing. The reply directed them to a certain page, where there was a donation button. When I clicked on the button, I got this reply: Bananas Wiki:Site support From Bananas Wiki Jump to: navigation, search We're currently not accepting donations. Use your money to buy more bananas! Retrieved from "http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Bananas_Wiki:Site_support"

Encouraging. Wouldn't it be fine if we could get to a stage where donations weren't needed either.

Ej, I'm not sure if this will help or not, but within the "Donation Amount" drop down, there maybe should be a choice that allows users to fill in their own amount. Some might choose to give more than $50, and others might choose to give, say, $30 instead of an amount listed.

I wonder who the half-dressed member at the left is and what exactly she contributes to the "member supported website".
