I've just installed Norton 360; replacing NIS 2007 installed before (but which I completely removed before installing Norton 360). Still using XP and the firewall hasn't changed (as far as I can see). I can use my Favourites key to log on to GB, but when I pick a forum, some refuse to show and hang my PC. There is no particular pattern to it - some forums (like this one) seems to work fine, but Identify allows me in but then screws me when I try to open a partuclar topic that has been posted. Anyone got any ideas. Oh BTW, another oddity. The GB favourites icon (the rose ?) has now changed to an HP icon. Very odd as I dont have an HP desktop. My wife has a HP laptop but there is no physical connection between the two PCs. Like I said, is it just me !!

EJ, The problem has now stableised. It hangs with 2 items remaining to download, stopping on a folder/site of PAYPAL.COM. Is this a strong hint for a donation {LOL}. Odd, as it doesnt happen on my wife's laptop running Vista with a second version of the same Norton software (which is where I am now mailing you from). I have thrown the problem at Norton but, as I have come to learn, they arent always exactly focused on customer service. I've also sought help from tech support for IE7 but that has also drawn a blank (so far). HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not just you, Terry. It's not causing hanging with my computer but there are blanks, as in the donation graph, and photos from the GB albums don't show up. I use the same browser but a different virus ware, McAfee.

Thanks Carol. I'm still getting some hang ups occassionally on my own PC but I noticed that when I dont, the Donations slide bar is "x"ed out - maybe that is significant.

Can your firewalls be blocking the images from paypal.com and fundraiserinsight.org?

Thanks EJ and Loretta. I had already run the comparison of security settings between my PC and the wifes laptop; they were the same. But I said in my first post I was having problems with Favicons (the little icons against a site name in the Favourites list). Tech support for my PC suggested that some spyware may have got onto my machine (though why Norton didnt pick it up I know not). So I ran AVG spyware check and came up with 30 suggested items, followed by Spybot which came up with a few more. Why these guys cant come up with a "common" set, I fail to see (LOL). Anyway the problem seems to have got a whole lot better (though it still hangs up on PAYPAL occasionally on certain forums). Most of my favicons are back too (but sadly the GB rose refuses to appear, despite reloading the main GB page into Favourites). Again, many thanks. .

I have lost icons before too. In the past, one reason was because I completely cleaned out my temporary files, including all gifs. Sometimes they came back down the road for some unknown reason.

That would make sense. I have used Norton to do the complete scan and cleanup (which does include temporary files).

Ej, I can use Firefox to avoid the problem. Thanks for the offer. It's a mystery why IE 7 cuts out some items.

This hang up on PAYPAL.COM is driving me to distraction. For those who like riddle solving try explaining this (if you can it'll probably keep me out of the home for the bewildered (LOL)). GB home page comes up OK. Most forums can be accessed OK but some, notably Report Problems and Identify Plants hangs on the Paypal.com download. So I exit GB and, for good measure, also exit my ISP. I reconnect to my ISP but, before attempting to access GB, I access other sites - like my insurance company, stock exchange prices (i.e. nothing to do with GB or gardening). All work OK so, while still logged on to one of these other sites I activate GB from my favourites list. It comes up and all forums are accessable (including Reports and Identify). Weird, or what ? EJ, if you find this debate getting tiresome, I'll quite understand if you wish to dump it.

Like Growits post on LOCK OUT I was getting the same problem. That bit is fixed OK and I can get at my profile. The bonus for me is I no longer get the hang on the PAYPAL.COM bit. However, just tried to post this message, did the preview bit as advised and then posted. Ooops, failure message similar to Loretta.

After preview I used the post message button immediately below the previewed message; with all those yellow highlights showing what a spelling bum I am. That is what gave the error message. On this post, I went thro preview but used the button BELOW the amendment panel (I.e. at the very bottom of the page). Does that help, EJ ?
