I have got a few neat time saving tips that I use around the garden, and have thought of sharing them. But I have never been sure as to which would be the appropriate forum. At the same time, I would love to learn new gardening tips and tricks from others. I thought a forum just on gardening tips and tricks of the trade would be interesting and extremely useful. After all, us gardeners are a strange bunch - we are by nature highly competitive, and yet, we love to share! What better way to express these traits, then, than a forum that allows a gardener to proudly declare his brilliance by coming up with good tips, and yet have the opportunity to share those tips as well.

Hmmm. I like the sound of that too. Like homemade bug deterrants or weed stoppers, recycling things into garden use, stuff like that. Like using a coffee filter in the bottom of pots so allow drainage but keep in the earth.

That would be a neat idea to have things like that in one place for easy access!

I like the idea of a tips and tricks section but I agree with Denise. I am a relative newcomer to the site and find it quite hard to keep track of all the different subjects. If I post a question I cannot remember where it is or miss answering a question for the same reason. I want this added but I think some of the others could be lumped together.

Moira, this has been discussed a few times, for example here. I think it is worth pursuing. Maybe you have some helpful suggestions.

Thanks Mara but after reading that lot I am even more confused! Everyone agrees the forum is too big yet everyone wants to keep things separated. I know people have particular interests in certain groups of plants etc. but could they not be sub-sectioned under a general heading? Perennials for example. Most will only be discussed during their growing season and then be unused. There is a section just for Irises but then Irises come up in the general perennial heading as well which is also confusing because Irises are rhizomes so should they be in the bulbs section? I posted a shrub under perennials because I couldn't find a heading for shrubs I then felt pretty stupid when I spotted it the next day. I seem to spend my time searching for the correct place to put things or read posts rather than actually writing anything. I don't think I have been here long enough to make many suggestions as I still have not even managed to look at each section!

When I visit the first thing I do is click on New Messages. That neatens things up a bit. Since I'm such a relative newcomer I don't want to voice too much opposition, but Mara's comments in the linked thread make a lot of sense. There are many forums that could easily be combined.

"but we're getting so many forums....many of which are used just seasonally, some hardly used...." That's exactly the problem. When it comes to "tips and tricks", there is a multitude of forums in which they can be discussed, depending on the nature of the suggestion made. But there isn't any system of cross linking postings related to tips - one would have to scour the whole site in order to do so. There are certain plant specific forums which have heavy traffic - and that's due to the popularity of the particular plants discussed, or else, it's due to a core group of very interested gardeners who frequent those forums. If you look beyond that, the others that are more likely to be busier are the ones that has a more general discussion to it. For example perennials - it's not limited to any specific plant. When you split certain perennials to create their own forum, that's when you see a drop in traffic. So, there are two ways to go with forums - either make them general ("perennials" "trees" "vines") or make them plant specific ("grasses" "bamboos" "day lilies", etc.) With tips and tricks, we are looking at a more general forum - one in which every Gardenbuddy is likely to show more than a passing interest, whether they are partial to roses, or to hellebores, or to grasses, or to maples.
