Esteemed administrators, True gardening begins and ends in compost. We buy many products while feeding our passion, often those products don't work. Compost and compost tea work. A really good compost pile is a well planned, PH correct, aerated microbial party! The making of compost is a science bordering on art. In addition to "amendments forum" I recommend a Compost Forum. A new age is coming ML

I second that idea if it would not be too much work for Ej.

A compost forum would be fine but it will be up to you to see it gets used.

Melonhead, you can have the science, lol! I'll just continue to enjoy tossing and turning. It's worked for 20 years!

Welcome to gardenbuddies, James! I'm wondering if you've had a good look around this web site and checked out the Soil Amendments in the Garden forum. Ej is very accommodating, as you can read at the beginning of that forum. It was started in February 2003 and focuses mainly on composting ideas. There are, I believe, less than 50 threads in the forum, and so it appears to be one of the slower forums. If we have two forums dedicated to soil amendments, then I think the comments will be divided and the forums will be even slower. Is it the word 'compost' that you would like to see in the title for the forum? Could we perhaps change the title of the Soil Amendments forum to read Composting and Soil Amendments in the Garden forum? Or the other way around, so it's not lost in the line up, to Soil Amendments and Composting in the Garden forum.

I think that's a good idea, Diane. They seem like very compatible subjects. Now I'm going to have to go check it out.

I had a brief look through the Soil Amendments forum and counted the word 'compost - composting' about 135 times. There are a lot of good ideas in this forum, but I think most people will be confused if we have Soil Amendments and Compost forums. Please forgive me for coming back to this thread, but we are having a few concerns about there being so many forums already and this idea just seems to be covered already. Perhaps it could be more detailed for those who are interested in one aspect ... but I don't think it would get much attention at this time. Okay, I'll be quiet now. But I'd love to hear your ideas on compost, James!

My handsome black unit is filled with 97% leaves and rest kitchen scraps. Just the simple unit in the yard. It's great to get peoples feedback on what they add & how often they do things. I had tried the red worm ranch , that did not work out for me. But would try adding more red worms to this unit alone. I was amazed how just putting leaves in a black garbage bag & letting it sit fora few months, how much it broke down. WIsh some one had some good bat stuff.

Great idea. To combine the two forums. I will get started on this.
