Woke up this morning to "Artie, NO, get down from there!" Rolled over and went back to sleep. About 15 minutes later I hear, "Artie NO! Your mama won't be happy!" That's all it took ... the magical mama word.

As I walk into the kitchen there's Mike wearing a frown, sitting at the bar and Artie looking perfectly innocent comes running to my feet. Seems being allowed on the bar stool was no longer enough and he took that forbidden step onto the raised bar and then the peninsula countertop before jumping to the floor. I went beserk and banned him and his sister from the addition today. Moved their food out of the kitchen and the litterbox out of the laundry room. Both are in the spare bedroom right now (the food and box, not the kitties).

I'm pretty lenient as far as where they're allowed, but the countertops have always been off limits. I knew when Artie started jumping up onto the barstool that trouble could be brewing, but I was hoping with 2 weeks of good behavior that it might not be an issue.

Jain's pic of the kitty-filled table and a current thread on the Cooking Forum along with today's development begs the question ... do you or don't you allow the 4-legged kids in the kitchen? And if you have cats, how do you keep them off the countertops? Foil, spray bottle?

I don't mind pets in the kitchen but not on the counters or the chairs. Larry didn't want the dogs on the bed, but I won that argument when I told him that most of it was his hair The dogs aren't really allowed on the beds or the sofas. They do sneak the sofa once in a while!

I'd use the water sprayer for a cat I guess. I don't know much about cats, but for the pups, I put pennies in a can, a trainer told me that, and when the dogs got close to the couch, we shook the can. I think it made my Chip neurotic :)

The cats never have been in our kitchen since we moved to this house 10 years ago. This old farmhouse has doors to almost each and every room, so it is fairly easy to relegate beasts to certain areas. The dog is mostly in the family room & laundry room. Eventually she'll be allowed in the kitchen I believe, if well behaved. Our former Bouvier never reached up for anything there.

In early marriage days, our cats were all over the counter tops and I think that was because I used to keep butter out there and I was away teaching all day. I know one cat learned to open cupboards and the canisters inside them! We devised a new lock system!

i live in zoo, enter at your own risk... if hair bothers you, meet me in the garden because i could knit sweaters a day from my brood... life happens here, some have unruly kids, i just have the 4 legged versions... and for the record, mine are ALL strays that needed a home, so i forfeited a decent clean life for their well being... and my sanity...
cindy you only have 2, squirt bottles will work, but i have a sound that i make that makes mine run like a thundering herd... they have broken many things when i do it, so its only when i really want them gone... which is like every minute... can you tell its a love hate relationship?

Aww, poor Artie! Cindy, you know I can relate to being a cat mommy! However, DH would NEVER scold Kit...she's a princess! I'm the disciplinarian (sp?) in this house. We do allow Kit on the table (I don't have a choice). I change the tablecloth daily. I'm lucky as Kit has never shown an interest to be on the countertops and I've never seen evidence of her being there. (Of course, who knows for sure!). I'm not sure what I would do if she did...I couldn't spray her with water or anything else that would upset her. All I can say is good luck with your resolution.
