With much encouragement from Jain, I'm posting some photos of a new garden area we began developing last fall. It is very sparse right now as planting has just begun, lots of wire and "bones" in these pictures, but I hope it will be lush and colorful as summer gets into full swing.
Please forgive the untidiness, it's a work in progress.
Most of the spring flowers are yet to be planted.
The daffodils are about the only thing providing color in the ground right now. The tulips haven't quite opened.
I planted the most fragrant daffs in the heart shaped bed, they're a little later blooming than these, so they haven't quite hit their peak yet. It's an odd shaped piece of land, adjacent to the side of the house and driveways so we decided to make the focal point 6 (eventually rose & clematis covered) arches over a sandstone pathway, leading to a wisteria covered pergola at the end. It's difficult to see/capture the arches because they are rusty metal and blend into the woodsy background in these photos. I think as the roses grow to cover the arches the photos will be better. We've just begun planting them with bareroot roses. The majority of the roses we chose for this area are on their own rootstock, from 'Heirloom Roses' near Salem, Oregon. Here are some random pictures in no particular order so you can get a sense of how we are planting them. Here's a shot from inside the garden looking out the entrance arbor towards the main driveway. (The decorative bike is just there temporarily to discourage deer from jumping through during the daytime. We use other barriers in the evening.)
Both sides of each arch will be planted like this with roses and clematis.
The wine barrels are planted with roses from another area, they will be moved out and arranged differently later.
Deer fencing had to be installed (which I'm not fond of), so I cannot wait until the shrubs and trees planted along the interior perimeter grow to help camouflage it somewhat. We planted about 14 French lilacs, an espelier pear, some grapes to be planted this weekend, and I have a couple of climbing roses also yet to planted there. I'm sure the deer will eat their share from the other side of the fence. As long as we can get the plants a good start, I don't mind sharing some. :) A couple more shots from back further:
You can see, still LOTS to be done!
There is so much more planting to turn this into a Hummingbird/Butterfly friendly garden. I'll post more pictures as it progresses. Just a couple more for now:
The tower you see behind the table is due to be removed in a couple of weeks. (It used to hold a 12' satellite dish, it was inherited with the purchase of the house.) It will require hiring a crane to remove it, and will be sold, or recycled. That is the area where the wisteria pergola will be built.
It's very tall. :(
Thank you for taking the little tour with me, next time I post pictures of this area I hope the garden is lush with flowers and greenery, and much more interesting.

I loved the tour~ What a romantic oasis you are creating there. As much attention as you put into your home and kitchen you are putting into the gardens..I love the little heart shaped bed..the bell jars..all the arches.I can see it all..and all filled in too! Don't apologize for sparse. You will be amazed how quickly it will all fill in..especially in your climate! Mary..you need a Fairy in that last house~ You do!! So much creativity everywhere I look! I have a small white bicycle here:) We are on 1/2 an acre so I can't get carried away..and Jacques prefers golf:) You will love your many daily garden walks..I am sure you do already..hats off.. C'est beau beau beau! I love a garden.I would be terribly sad without one.

oh mary... that heart bed is so cute! look at all your cute carts and stands! ALL your pretties are such deer food here, but i know this is for your new secure area. right? oh i love the scent of daffs... and your arches are my very fav... its going to be a killer garden! i love heirloom roses, i stop every time we got to see the iris. last time they had a stray cat, it was the cutest thing, i so wish i brought it home, but my coiffures are full! the deer won't jump through the gate, not their style, they rather go under, then over, and never through~at least my gazillion! if that tower is missing the dish, keep it for the wisteria! that would be a knock out to see it rambling high and mighty blue on blue! gosh each pic is a little treasure... i loved that you shared, its going to just be the prettiest garden! do you have a garden thats not deer proof, or is this your main area now? i just keep scrolling up and down, just wonderful!

Mary, everything is just beautiful...such a variety and tasteful...and so you! One thing I know for sure is that gardening is hard work... and it appears you've been doing a lot of that. I can see in your garden pictures and WFD pictures that you have a great "eye" for design and composition. Thank you for taking the time to share, Cynthia

Mary it is now and will be even more beautiful in time! I can't wait to see your clematis and rose arches when they fill in. It will be so beautiful. So many pretties you will be planting. I love delphiniums - one of my favorites. Such a pretty impatiens! I would love to try rannunculus - I've never tried growing them here. Will they be hardy for you? Love the fairy and fairy house :)

Thank you for sharing your wonderful gardens! I too, look forward to watching them fill in. I am so envious of all those beautiful delphinums and rannuculus such beautiful colors for this early in the year. We got 6 inches of snow last night so I am so antsy for spring.
