the whats for dinner thread, wfd, is a great place for everyone to join in and chat about your meals, but please, feel free to tell us a little something extra about yourself~

i am jain, in my early 50s and live in northern california on 5 steep acres with entirely to many pets. i suppose i am considered a housewife, tending to land and house, in a marginal way at best, but it keeps me very busy! i did online stock trading for almost a decade, but after i took a real vacation from the market in 2002 i just never returned to it with the same gusto. now, i am not even an active trader... my passion has always been the garden, but heat is my enemy now, with summers reaching 115+ that has been curtailed the last 2 summers. last winter i started to play in the kitchen again, after admiring all of moniques glorious pics and meals, it stirred a bit of creative interest. i have been with my husband for 24 years, he works for a large drug company in town. my interests are reading, traveling, gardening and now i think i can honestly say FOOD! i love the pretty side of it more then being a true cook, but as long as it goes down easy, and no blood is spilled, i am content!

I’m Evi and I live in Southern California. I’m in my mid 30’s married to my husband Bill for almost 4 years. I have identical twin 18 year old step-sons that lived with us every week Thursday – Sunday until about 1 month ago when they both shocked everyone and signed up for the Marine Corps (currently doing their training in San Diego). It’s been a very difficult time for my husband since we can only write letters (no phone calls or visits for 13 weeks). I’m sorry they didn’t go off to college instead but I am enjoying the honeymoon phase with Bill for the first time since our wedding. We are going to start trying for a baby in the next few months.

I enjoy gardening but only have a small yard since our pool occupies most of our backyard. I have enjoyed accessorizing what little flower beds we have with garden art (everything from birdhouses, feeders, lanterns, fountains, birdbaths etc...). Gardening is my therapy. I work full-time about 45 minutes away from home for a large bank as an executive assistant – this will be my 15th year with the company. I enjoy traveling, gardening, baking, photography, decorating and shopping for dishes. I’m my spare time I have started doing flower arrangements for weddings.

Both my parents came to the US in 1956 from Hungary. Growing up we had tons of dogs since my parents bred Hungarian Pulis (type of herding dog) - but today I only have my little Bichon Frise ‘Heidi’. I wish I could cook as well as my grandmother does back in Hungary but I’m learning little by little. I enjoy eating (who doesn’t) but most of all I enjoy the presentation of a meal. I always wanted to work as a pastry chef but maybe for my next career. I am looking forward to learning all types of new recipes and gathering many gardening tips from this site. And most importantly getting to know some really nice people.

Bill & I in Hawaii.

Oh gosh. Where to start?

I'm 41.
I'm married for twenty years (to the same person!).
My son turned 10 this year.
I think I had my first little vegetable garden when I was 8.
I never grew a perennial in my life until 2000 (well, maybe 1999?).
I am a professor of organic chemistry and spend most of my time doing cancer research.
I love to garden, COOK, make wine, photography, and I love my MAC.
I'm socially liberal and fiscally conservative.
Two years ago I started running and will run my second full marathon in a few weeks (I used to weigh over 300 pounds).
That's about it for me.
next ? ? ?

Hi,

My name is Elise. I'm in my 50's, and live with my husband of 31 years, Carl, and my two grandsons Allen (age 6) and Kameron (age 5) in an old farm house built in 1929, on a farm in Central Mississippi. We inherited the farm in 1994 from his grandparents. There's still a great deal of work to be done in renovating and upgrading, with not much time to do it all. But maybe we'll be done in the next 10 years or so.

I had four children--two sons and two daughters. We lost our youngest son, Ken, three years ago this week when he swam into an electrical field at our local reservoir. Needless to say, and putting it mildly, this is a very hard week for us.

Through an acquaintance that I met on a Yahoo list, my husband and I learned that quite a few people die this way every year. So please do not let your loved ones swim ANYWHERE that electricity approaches water--particularly in marinas. Swimming off of houseboats is particularly risky. If you would like to learn more, you can learn about it here: http://www.qualitymarineservices.net/electric_shock_drowning_incident_list. html . My son's accident is incident #7 on this list.

My two daughters are married and my oldest daughter, Jennifer, has a daughter, Amelia, who will be 5 on October 1, and a son, Alex, who will be 2 months on the 17th. We have given Jennifer and her husband about 5 acres next to us to build a home, and they are busy with that right now. My other daughter, Kari, and her husband are newly wed as of July 7, and they are poor but ecstatically happy. My son, Dan, is still in recovery from the breakup of his marriage. His wife walked out on him and the boys at Christmas 5 years ago, which is why I now have them.

I have a double major in chemistry and biology, and did research for a long time, but got tired of the politics of that, so now stay home to raise my second family.

Cooking is a thing that's in my blood, probably because my grandfather was a Swiss-trained chef who immigrated from Interlaken to the US at the turn or the 20th century. It must be an inherited thing, because the whole family really gets into the cooking. Our family reunions have become massive week-long cooking marathons since we began renting a group camp outside Slidell, LA several years ago. Such fun, but we all go home much fatter.

I have been in the process these last four years, of formatting a family cookbook that compiles recipes from 5 generations of family. The family name is Finger, so I've entitled it "Finger Foods and Other Good Stuff". It will also include stories to keep people and places alive in our memories. I'm trying to figure out how to print it affordably, and will probably do an electronic version as well. I have to admit that formatting such a large project consistently is proving daunting.

You folks all have such a way with photography, and design. I have watched your efforts for such a long time. I am envious.

Jain, I didn't know about your stock trading! If you survived the downturn you are better than I - I did some of the same but too much too late. If you were active in the mid to late 90s you probably did very well.

Evi - good luck with your family plans :)

DG, I am so sorry for the loss of your son. I can't imagine your pain but am glad that you shared it with us. Sharing is a good thing :)

I am Susan, have broken the 60 decade and live in SE Wisconsin in the Milwaukee area - a Great Place by a Great Lake as we are called. I've been married to my hubby John for 33 years and we have two beautiful daughters - 24 and 26 - the youngest was wed this summer. I taught elementary school for 8 years and then 'retired' to raise my girls. I sell insurance and real estate part-time am also beginning to sell my photography. I love cooking, gardening, photography and painting.

This is hard.... but I'll try.

I'm Nancy from NW Lower Michigan. Beautiful summer's here, but you can have our winter's! I moved into what use to be our family summer home on a lake that is also connected to Lake Michigan. That was nine years ago, but seems like just a few months. The first long winter after moving here I got into playing on the computer. Checking the weather, reading the news, looking for recipes and playing...games, like euchre, pinochle, gin, pool, etc. Oh, guess I should add...shopping.

I'm mostly retired, (I'm in my 50's), having been a sales rep in the art's and craft industry for over twenty years, traveling around the country. Had a gourmet deli here for a few years. That was fun but a lot of hard work. I also found I really didn't like doing catering...too much stress. Now I just work part time at a cute little shop in town that closes in the winter. I also love to oil paint and do other crafty things...

My partner, Kim, is a Physician Assistant. We have one dog, Roxie, a chocolate lab mix.

We both like to cook...I really get into the baking and Kim is the official griller and soup maker. I also like to do some canning every year, we live near many orchards. Jam, salsas, plain fruits, applesauce...love it all.

Nancy

Evi - good luck with your plan!

Elise, I can't imagine losing a child. A former co-worker of mine lost her son to a senseless crime. He was a young police officer with two children and one on the way.

DH and I are best friends with 3 adult sons, 27, 21, and 18. I'm in my late 40's and holding :-) We enjoy getting away to our cottage on the weekends, and we have done extensive hiking, kayaking and cross country skiing.

I have quite a collection of recipes that I have gathered over the years from various sources, and we have had sit down dinners every night of the week ever since the boys were little. I rarely photograph my dinners, but I do share pictures of my life from time to time.

I am happy to have found the wonderful group of people on the garden recipe forum.
