Hi everyone! I'm a n00b, but I am impressed with all the knowledge and great insight here on this forum!

I am a clematis lover and have a few varieties that have thrived, a few that have fizzled. Everything I've learned, I have learned by trial and error...I picked up the gardening "bug" about ten years ago and have been muddling my way through ever since.

So, I guess my first question is...I have an old Jackmanii that I'd like to grow another variety along with, to either complement the purple or fill in during the bare summer months when ol' Jackman isn't blooming, but I'm a little afraid to dig around its roots to plant another clematis. Will it hurt an already established plant if I do this? If not, can anyone recommend a nice variety? The site is east facing and gets lots of bright sun until the afternoon.

Thanks in advance...and for helping this newbie out!

Hi Larae and welcome. There are quite a few good blue viticellas that would complement your Jackmanii. 'Prince Charles' has a long bloom time and flowers earlier than some. It's best to team it with another late flowering (group 3 type) so you can prune them at the same time.

Oh, Newbie, have fun!! I am an enthusiast in planting clematis near other plants, and near each other -- as long as they get fertilized well enough. I have sandy soil so amend it with rotted grass clippings, covered with chipped branches -- my plants thrive near one another.
Planted a new bed last year with 42 rows of 12 plants each, having clematis, roses, peonies, and Japanese maples abaout 1' from each other and they were fantastic.
Now am retired so can simply enjoy them. Planting close together and fertilizing them well enough works in my garden and oh, how lovely!!! Have fun in your garden!!

I second this suggestion. I am IN LOVE with Prince Charles and find that it grows quickly and looks nice paired with so many other clematis. If you are looking for a clematis with a very long bloom time, I recommend Odoribe (a pink bell shaped) but they get very tall.

I have Polish Spirit, similar to Jackmanii, mingling with Comtesse de Bouchard. They are planted 1 meter apart.

Beautiful combination, Luiza. Are those lilies in the bottom left? I love them, especially the fragrant kind.

I love the combination (of course...what wouldn't look lovely with Cdb?) but I also love your new hairstyle, Jane!

Thanks Charlene but change more due to light and time of day than change of style. LOL

Jane, the lilies are called Lollypops. I like them because they multiply very quickly.
