I have an old veggie garden that has become my holding bed along the side property, about 3 ft from neighbors. The problem is they have huge spruce trees planted about 8 ft away and the roots keep growing into my bed. I didn't notice the problem when it was used as a veggie garden, because it used to get tilled every year. Since 2004 I've started planting clematis along the back and have lost some. Probably because these tree roots are invading their space. If I planted them in 5 gal pots, how long would they be happy there ? Could I put Round-up on the cut end of the tree roots to stop any further growth into the garden, or would that kill the tree? Joan

I don't think Round-Up works applied to roots. You'd probably have to spray the needles (if it even works on spruce). You could try cutting the bottom out of buckets and planting the clematis in them. That gives them a good head start and also makes it easier to target water and fertilizer to them without the tree roots grabbing more than their fair share.

Roundup is used as a deciduous tree killer in evergreen forests so you would have to use a pretty large dose. It will not stop the growth of roots! Some kind of edging that goes deep is about the only answer and that would be short term as roots pretty much go where they please. I think using 5 gal pails with the bottom out, dug into the ground and then filled with a good growing mix is going to serve you well!

The dying is probably from lack of water as the trees will certainly suck it up big time.
