And the photos on CoTW imply it will be even more interesting as it opens up. What a special little thing!

That is incredibly stunning! Now I have an even bigger reason to be sad I can't grow this type here. It's my first time seeing this one, what a beauty!

Sorry to hear that you can't grow it where you are. Incidentally this is my first day of posting to this site and I seem to have got a really good response from people.

Interesting clematis. I understand that it also has single flowers at the same time. It is also said to be a sport of Frankie. In this case I think the single flowers may be more striking than the very unique double ones with the misplaced petaloids at least from the limited photos I have seen of this clematis. Do you have photos of the single flowers as well?

Firstly let me thank everyone for their response to my first postings. Jim,I have just been outdoors to take another look at Ocean Pearl and there are no single flowers on it at all, so can't help you with a photo. Yes Jane, a beautiful name for a beautiful clematis.

A beautiful and extraordinary alpina, thanks to the "misplaced" petaloids. Since I recently discovered I have a spot for another atragene, this has jumped right on to the short list. Thank you for showing us the photos! And welcome to GardenBuddies.

Hello Roelie & Mara, Thank you for your welcome. I have now planted my new Ocean Pearl in a place on its own. I have also just planted two more clematis quite close together, they are Omoshiro and Blue Eclipse,I am hoping they will complement each other.

Hello again, Susan. 'Omoshiro' and 'Blue Eclipse' are two of my favorite clematis. 'Blue Eclipse' does have a long flowering season (mine is in bloom now) and 'Omoshiro' does bloom early (mine is covered in healthy buds) so they should flower together at some point. The tricky bit is the pruning. I find that my 'Omoshiro', being a group 2 clematis, benefits from regular cutting back every year. On the other hand, 'Blue Eclipse' should generally be left unpruned and can become a mass of tangled growth. Personally I think they would look beautiful together, but it's not a low maintenance option. If you really want to do it though, then why not? Maybe someone else here who grows group 1's and 2's together can advise better. It's just something I try to avoid.

Hello Again Jane, Both my Omoshiro and Blue Eclipse are in flower together now. I always try to keep the pruning groups together when possible. On the solid brick rear wall of my double garage I have planted Ocean Pearl about 4ft away from one end and it is on it's own there. About 4ft away from the other end of the garage is Blue Eclipse. The Omoshiro is nearer to the Blue Eclipse than I would have liked because I hit a big concrete boulder when planting. I was hoping that the Omoshiro could be trained towards the Ocean Pearl end as there are horizontal wires all the way across there giving me about 10ft of garage wall for the Omoshiro to go. There is a big central bench running along the garage. I was hoping the Blue Eclipse and the Omoshiro would not infringe too much on each other. Failing that the wooden bench could be taken up and moved, then I can replant Omoshiro farther away from Blue Eclipse. What do you think?

Susan, how far apart are your 'Blue Eclipse' and 'Omoshiro'? Unless they are really close, it shouldn't be too much of a problem and certainly 10 ft of wall space should be enough. I make a habit of cutting mine back again after the first flush to keep it reasonably compact. Sounds like a nice place to sit. It would be a shame to move your bench. Unless of course you could move it forward enough to plant 'Omoshiro' behind it. That way you could keep your seat and give 'Omoshiro' equal growing room on both sides.
