These are gorgeous Kristl, I hope I get a pink one when mine flower, I have made a little hedge with heracleifolias. I hope they all decide to flower at the same time.

The flowers are small---small enough to be considered a weedy species by some people; but when you have many plants blooming at the same time, the effect is quite lovely. It also has an absolutely delicious lily-of-the-valley scent. The pink has started self-sowing, and a good percentage of them are coming true. As I mentioned sometime in the past, the pink just showed up one year as a sport in the garden.

Malgorzata sent me seeds and I have hundreds growing!...Unfortunately they are tiny so it will be a long wait for them to look like that. Patience IS a virtue.

Moira, here's a pic of two of the stans seedlings I have from the seeds Malgorzata sent me. They are the two on the left.
I am hoping to see some buds soon. When did you sow your seeds?

I sowed them as soon as I got them but cold outside in a pot as Malgorzata said. No baggies or anything for me I don't have the time. They are doing fine just very slowly! Yours look fantastic and it is good to see the size and foliage for a change. Gives me an idea of what I am going to get.

How come in Canada C. stans blooms so much sooner than in the country of origin?! September, October here! Your C.stans Krsistl is so nice...so floriferous. You are so right, the plants can look weedy ( and aren't all species weeds after all? ) but an masse the blooms do look charming and the fragrance is really noticeable and pretty. I do hope the seeds did well for everybody who got it from me. This is a tough plant and does very much behave like any perennial and should bloom for Moira without any trouble next year. Helen, I am so curious as to the color and shape of the flowers you might get. I did not have last year two plants that had the same looking blooms and all my plants were from seed wild collected.

Malgorzata....I just had a thought---remember when we were discussing the difference between Clematis stans and speciosa on this forum last winter? (I thought I was also growing speciosa, but have since decided all my plants are stans). Stans and Speciosa are very closely related and both are native to Japan. I remember Ton saying that his C. speciosa blooms much later than stans (about the time you say your stans blooms)--- September/October. So, I wonder if perhaps your plant is speciosa????? In which case, I would love to get seed from you, so that I could have the real thing. CGW says "similar to stans, but the leaves generally rather narrower and regularly toothed. In addition, the stamens are only one-third the length of the sepals."

Kristl, you may have all the seeds I will be able to get before the wind gets them! *Your* C.stans and *my* C.stans do not look the same but I don't have enough experience with this type yet....and can't comment on Speciosa.

Helen, I like the idea of the heracleifolias planted as a hedge. Are you putting it somewhere not close to the house? I have Mrs. Robert Brydon and I was trying to decide whether or not to give up on her spilling down the hill by my steps leading into the back arbor. They've done wonderfully all these years as a groundcover, but it looks kinda messy. Do you know what I mean? But I wouldn't want to miss out on the fragrance if I put her farther away as a hedge. I wonder if it would look just as unkempt. I like the variety of color, too, Kristl. Maybe I should try stans--because I think there's more color per plant than Mrs. Brydon.

Nancy, I have a little greenhouse which is on a cement slab quite a bit larger than the greenhouse. I decided to try the hedge for several reasons, one I could plant them close together and wait for them to flower to see what I had. Secondly having them there helps soften the ugly cement. I'm pretty sure that some of them are budding up now. I don't have Mrs. Robert Brydon, and I don't know if she grows into a bush like these ones do. Yours must look stunning when in full flower. What sort of scent does she have?

Is this what is in the herbaceous mix from you? I have a few plants which survived my transplanting and I thought them to be heracleifolia but they do look like this leaf.

Clayton, Stans would have been in the "herbaceous mix" most years -- plus heracleifolia, tubulosa, tubulosa davidii, integrifolia, rectas, maybe brachyura, fremontii, hirsutissima, any herbaceous types in the viorna group.

Let me know if that works Helen. I had planned on doing the same thing but at the base of a fence with taller clematis growing behind. How much sun do they need? Can I get away with semi-shade?
