I went to Great Dixter many years ago and was so impressed with the gardens. An essential visit for any gardener I think. I'd love to go back.

Wonderful photos Heather!

Jane,

Thought I'd let you know that I bought 'Dawn' last week, she was stood on her own in one of those little tiny pots. Someone had left her all on her own, a long way away from all the other clematis. When I turned her over, her roots were coming through the bottom of the pot like mad. She is now in a larger pot here and looks really settled.

That meeting was definitely meant to be.

You have a grandiose Garden.

Gerlinde, I too can only dream of a garden like this. Great Dixter is the creation of the late Christopher Lloyd and his family. It is located in East Sussex and if you ever have the chance to visit England, it is well worth a trip out to go and see it. This garden has inspired visitors from all over the world. A treat not to be missed! I would also recommend reading some of Chris Lloyd's books. You are bound to find many inspirational ideas there also.

Instead of the fuchsia, maybe crape myrtle or abelia grandiflora would work here.

Good idea, Loretta.

Lisa and Sue, glad you appreciated the photos. There were many more I could have taken but I really just wanted to make the most of the experience while I was there. Sue, I hope you get another chance to go soon.

Susan, nice to hear you picked up Dawn. Mine hasn't put on a lot of growth so far but she's in full shade which is maybe a mistake. Are you going to continue to grow yours in a pot?

Hello Jane,

Mine too is in quite heavy shade, but I read somewhere that Dawn will grow well in a very shady place. (but I wonder, if she will flower well in that situation.) We will certainly leave her in the pot for a while as that means we can move her around to different aspects. We have three large, loose, natural bog oak tree stumps that we can move around the garden. (we never move them now as they are strategically placed for effect)
I think eventually she may look lovely scrambling over the East facing one.

Yes I wonder about the flowering too. We have had such a wet, cloudy summer and all of my clematis have fared poorly in shade this year. I may have to do a major re-shuffle this autumn.

Oh , silly me, Jane. I thought it was your Garden. So it is a special , Public Garden. called "Great Dixter" , must remember that name. I actually copied your post. It is ironic, It may be that we travel to England next year. Our son started a new job for an small Aviation company in Toronto and he conveyed to us that we are on the "flyer list for friends". However, at the moment the commute is just to New York and some big cities in Canada. But they will add Chicago and some other cities in the US soon. They will co-operate with West Jet though soon and we then can transfer from a small, 70 seat plane to a large Jet to go overseas. We have to wait.
If it should happen, then I definitely will go and see Great Dixter. Of course we will also visit with our relatives (my husbands Cousins & Family)one who lives in County Durham and the other one in Essex. So that would really be a dream come true if that would materialize.

Gerlinde, how nice to have travel in your plans. If you do get to County Durham, let me know and I can point you to some lovely gardens in our area also. Hope you get to visit.

Hello back, Jane. Wow, thank you, yes that would be a dream come true if we could fly to England, perhaps next year. I would love to see as many gardens as I can. I love your old Castles also. Peculiar as it may sound but as a child I lived in a small castle in Saxony with my parents. It was then the East German Zone, under Russian occupation. Anyway, if (I hope) this plan becomes reality I will let you know well in advance. I'll send you a P.M., I would gladly take you up on your generous offer.

Jane,

We were actually planning to stay around your area, either last week or this week, but with the weather being so bad we have given it up as a bad job for this year. Even so, we would be interested to know of the lovely gardens around your area. I know Alnwick Gardens are not far from you, they are fab, and we just love the tree house there too.

I hope the weather improves or it may not be worthwhile going to Great Dixter this year.

Nice Gerlinde, just let me know. Castles we have aplenty, the nearest to us probably Raby Castle, a lovely spot.

Susan, Alnwick Gardens sounds wonderful but we are south of Newcastle and tend to head south instead of north when we visit gardens. Newby Hall gardens and Castle Howard are favorite spots. We've also recently looked at gardens to the west of us. One real treasure that we found was Dalemain house and gardens in the Lake District. It has a wonderful old rose collection with a few clematis thrown in too. And yes, the weather has been ghastly but it's done wonders for the plants so I won't complain. I would still go to Great Dixter if I were you. You only need one reasonable day to make it worthwhile. I don't mind a bit of cloud personally. Let me know if you do go, I'd love to hear what their September garden looks like.

Thanks for that Jane,

We haven't done Newby Hall or Castle Howard so that's on our list now. I think we probably will do Great Dixter, whatever the weather.
My husband hits retirement this year and I will be 64, we have got to the stage in life now that we are 'ticking boxes' with everything we want to do.

Clematis aside just for one moment please as I would like to share these photo's with you of some other interesting things that we have seen at Great Dixter. There is such a charm about the whole place and it feels like you are back in time when you are there. Hope these pictures help you see what I mean.

Even though these photo's were taken the third week in September there was still quite a bit of colour at Great Dixter as you can see.

Thanks Alison, Roelie & Jane,

If it weren't for Jane we would never have been to Great Dixter or indeed all the other places around that area that we have seen during our recent 19 day break and the weather has been beautiful too.

Some of the places we visited whilst there are:

Wisley, which is lovely.

Sissinghurst, another nice place.

Royal Brighton Pavilion, well worth seeing the interior there as it is very, very different.

Chartwell, Ooh, how we enjoyed it there and the weather was glorious. We were shocked at how moved we were especially when we went through the house.

Merriments garden, An absolute must for anyone visiting the area, we took plenty of photo's of just about everything and we liked the structures that they have erected there for the climbers.

Scotney Castle. Lovely too.

Leeds Castle. There is plenty to see there, but it is pricey as you can only purchase a twelve month pass for it. Never mind we can always hope to go again in the Springtime.

Bodiam Castle. Very nice,

Bateman's. which was Rudyard Kiplings home was also quite nice.

We also visited ever so many garden centres and of course ended up buying yet more clematis.
